Reviews for Donkey Kong (#1437)

Review by The Dean of Games on 08 Sep 2012 (Rating: 4)

1986 Ocean Software (UK)

This seems to be a pretty good conversion from the timeless arcade game at least compared to the 1983 unoficial version also from Ocean.
I havent played it enough but so far all seems quite accurate and very playable.
The graphics, sound and even the game mechanics all work quite well.
I already forgotton how hard this game was for me in the arcades and how I hated it. And it looks the same in the Spectrum version. Ah schuks!

A diligent official conversion[*] of the famous coin-op, although Mario's sprites could have been done better, and so the girl, which is a bunch of yellow matchsticks tied together. Nice sound in the 128k version. Anyway, I never thought of Donkey Kong as an irresistible concept or gameplay.

Compared to Mario Bros, released a year later, this is more like it. It may not look completely the part but it sure does play the part. This proves Nintendo arcade games weren't a stretch too far for the Spectrum, Mario Bros was just a bad port. This is does Mario much more justice.
