Reviews for Green Beret (#2134)

Review by Stack on 12 Feb 2009 (Rating: 5)

Stabtastic arcade action through multiple levels, Green Beret set new standards in terms of playability and action finesse whilst reinforcing anti Red propoganda in the impressionable minds of Cold War era children. Power up weapons set you up to demolish mortars, tanks and bridge heads. It has a cast of characters worthy of a feature film adventure epic and it remains very playable today.
Green Beret was beautifully programmed, right down to the last guard sheep.

Amazing game. Typical of a whole genre of side scrolling action games of the time, yet done so well and smoothly that it stands out as being unique. Must have been a very addictive game, as I remember completing it despite the extreme difficulty of the later levels and bosses, and the inability to save a game.

An excellent coversion of the coin-op game where you shot your way through the scrolling levels.

You could pick up flamethrowers, bazookas etc and jump, stab and avoid bullets, mines and mortars.

A very good game overall.

Another solitaire-soldier on a-mission-game, you are a Green Beret, a highly trained combat machine.
You have the difficult mission of infiltrating in all enemy defense installations on your own and rescue the 4 captive comrades!
An impossible mission maybe to you and me, but not to a pixelized Rambo type-guy.

This superb game was written by the late Jonathan Smith, remember his signatures, some with the letters backwards others mixed together?
No?
Well, but I bet you remember the countless hours playing his magnificent games, like this one - an all time classic!

A good war arcade game indeed... not being a fan myself I still apreciate the high playability of Green Beret.

The atmosphere in this game is just right. The movements are smooth and precise, the scroll is quite pleasant, and the sound does its job quite well.

Green Beret was one of the first games I ever played in my old Speccy and I keep some fond memories of it... as well as 3D Tanx.

Not my favourite game but an accomplished one that I would recommend to any war arcades lover, unlike myself...

Perfect 48k single load game.

A load which have lovely graphics, stunnig sfx.. and plays like a rage arcade.
If the game itsn't any better is because the original coin-op source itsn't a highlight.

There's no doubt it looks beautiful and it's really well programmed, I just struggle to like this game because it's quite difficult. Saying that I was never a fan of the arcade game to begin with so maybe that explains my difficulty getting into this.

I like it, too dificult. I ended it on the 21th century with some extra lives.

It became very famous, but it is not the kind of game I enjoyed...

Technically speaking is rather good, a lot of soft movements with different elements on the screen.

Not on my top 100! but it can a be a a "TOP 25 ever" for many.

One of the best conversions for the ZX Spectrum by the great Joffa Smith, as good and playable as the Konami arcade classic.

You're a green beret and must infiltrate four enemy installations: Missile Base, Harbour, Bridge and Prison Camp, where you finally reach your mission: rescue the captives.

It's a frenetic horizontal shooter in which the character can use different weapons - flame throwers, grenades, rocket launchers- and faces several enemies (even parachutes!). At the end of each stage, the enemy make a big offensive using all the troops at their disposal.

A superb game with great graphics, sound effects and movement, plus a perfect scroll that make it one of the best shooters for the Spectrum with another great loading screen by F. David Thorpe and iconic artwork by Bob Wakelin.

I cannot believe I've never reviewed this. This as any Joffa game is well programmed and brutally difficult, though it is far better than the arcade version so it scores bonus points for that.
