Reviews for Gunrunner (#2181)

Good arcade. With inspiration in Quartet, a coin-op from Sega. Retains graphics, weapons and jet-pack from that arcade, while delivers other own elements with autonomy, doesn't feeling like a flagrant rip-off.

Being slightly too rigid in its response to controls, the game suffers of a bit too stoic gameplay. Is challenging, but much of the times you do not enjoy.

As far as run-and-gun games go, Gunrunner is a pristine example. It also requires good memory in order to remember where the major hazards are, e.g. avoid shooting where a mine lies or how many jumps you must perform in order to avoid falling to your doom in a pit.

The problem is, it's derivative - there is little here in terms of presentation and gameplay to let it stand out of the crowd of similar games. It's cleverly programmed but ultimately does not feel very satisfying. With some more polish or features it could have been a classic. As it is, it's good but not exceptional.

Side view platform-shoot'em up. It's like a flying aliens filled course, and each time you die you have to repeat it from the start. There are power up's to help you, like a very well welcomed tri-directional shooting, or a jetpack, or a shield or "poison" which is another word for "smart bomb". The graphics are monochrome, but clear. The main character looks a bit funny to me. Very nice tune. It's an OK game, playable, but without any outstanding ideas or features.
3/5

I quite liked this and it's certainly a better game than Yeti which Christian Urquhart and Mike Smith brought out a year later. It's quite a hard game and I'm shit at it and it's not helped when you turn around slowly and so when enemies come at you quickly from behind you literally cannot react to it in time. But it's still quite a fun game, I just wish I was better at it.
