Reviews for Frogger (#22904)

Review by Stack on 23 Feb 2009 (Rating: 2)

Perhaps the most interesting thing about this version of the old arcade classic is that the author, a Spectrum programmer with a proven history, bothered to unearth it and finally complete it in 2009, uploading the finished product to World of Spectrum.
This nice preservation back story meant that I had to try it, and really wanted to find it frustratingly addictive - the magic ingredient that so many previous Spectrum versions failed to deliver.
Graphically very satisfying, with nice frog animation, this version sadly misses out on playability. The odds are too stacked against the player to make the game flow nicely.

Ketmar's going for my total at this rate! Nice to see a good bunch of reviews posted here lately, well done, and now here's one of mine to bring the whole atmosphere right back down again, because that's how it usually turns out, I don't make the rules. Anyway, I've reviewed a number of Frogger games in my time here and there's no end to that yet as here's Frogger from Deanysoft, Dean Hickingbottom to be precise, an old friend of World of Spectrum before everything went to shit. He wrote a number of games for Alternative Software and their sub label Again Again back in the day such as Australian Rules Football, Gilbert and Punch & Judy as well as the unreleased Ninja Grannies, yes that really is a thing. According to Dean it was written in 1992 on the Amstrad CPC for his wife and then converted to the Spectrum but was only recovered and finished in 2009. This looks really nice actually, it's smooth, cute and colourful but perhaps a bit too fast particularly on the logs. And speaking of the logs it's there where we have the game's biggest flaw. Now usually Frogger simply moves up the screen but here he walks and shuffles up the screen including when on the logs. This made timing very difficult and was a personal annoyance of mine. It is a nice game and I've played far worse clones to be overly critical of it, but the log section annoyed me greatly. Not perfect but pleasant enough in the very least.
