Reviews for Jack the Nipper II: In Coconut Capers (#2566)

Review by Zagrebo on 06 Oct 2010 (Rating: 4)

The received wisdom on this game these days is that it pales next to its illustrious prequel but this attitude misses the point. 'Coconut Capers' is nothing like the original 'Jack the Nipper', nor was it intended to be. Whilst the original was an arcade-adventure which relied heavily on take-this-drop-it-here gameplay the sequel is a platformer in the Monty Mole mode with the arcade-adventure aspect significantly reduced. As such, it's a very different game to play and the environment (an Australian jungle rather than the urban Britain of the first game) gives it a whole new feel. Jack's sprite is full of character, the "everyone in sunglasses" shtick is fun, the graphics are superb (the Spectrum version beats the C64 and CPC versions visually by a country mile) and the 48K sound is great.

It retains some of the problems of the original (it can be a little tricky and some of the puzzles are a little obscure) but this is by no means an inferior sequel.

Jack the Nipper 2 bears little resemblance to it's predecessor. Whilst the overall goal of creating mischief is still the same, the gameplay has been vastly improved. The game takes place in a jungle and the graphics are suitably bright and colourful. There are platforms and ladders and even vines to swing on. The playing area is huge and there are several starting positions so you never know which part of the jungle you'll start in. The only complaint I have is that it's not easy to tell what some of the objects are. It would have been a good idea to have some text telling you which item you've just picked up. Overall this is a great platformer with some excellent graphics.

I take my hat off to anyone who can get through this game without cheating. Its really difficult and if it where a little more forgiving I think it'd be more fun. Its certainly packed with humor, has a huge map and Jack was worthy of a franchise, a real gem.

No doubt one of the best games ever. It follows the recipe left by Jet Set Willy and perfected in Dynamite Dan, but taken to a step higher. There is the need to swop objects to complete tasks and puzzles like in the Wally series, or pick objects that can help get rid of some baddies, like throwing coconuts.

The humour is still present, but not as naughty as baby Jack had previously accustomed us to. Graphically the game is a true delight, and so is the sounds, tunes and overall atmosphere of the game.

I'm still surprised there weren't any sequels after this, with such an adorable and versatile character, and such good game examples, it would certainly be expected the guys at Gremlin would continue to invest in the whole idea. Go figure...

I was never able to do solve any puzzles (which are a very small part of the game, anyway), but it's a very neat, cute and playable platformer with a huge map. Nice jingles and music too.
4,25/5

Although the loading screen is a bit ugly.

It certainly looks nicer and there are some improvements to the game like the simplified jumping and firing. It still lacks some charm for me but it is by far the better game from the original and thus giving it the same score would be harsh, so 4 will do nicely.

Fantastic Show of skills and colourful mastery.
I love this game!
This second part of an humorous classic takes it to another level. And it's an example of how to make things better when a second part is envisioned.

I love how you disappear behind the background!

Excellently funny, humorous and more than average colourful adventure that made the best of its first part and got better

Love this game. Played it loads back in the day and still looks and plays well today. Lots of charm and humour associated with it. The first game is a bit naff, this one though is a massive improvement. Who said sequels were crap?
