Reviews for Sheepwalk (#4453)

Review by Jonathan on 27 Dec 2008 (Rating: 2)

An early foray into the games market by Virgin Games, Sheepwalk is one of the least playable games ever written for the ZX Spectrum.

The concept is excellent: get the sheep into the pen and try to prevent them eating the crops in the next field. Points are awarded for rounding them up, and deducted for trampled/eaten crops, and for sheep drowned. As such, there is much scope for mischief by chasing sheep into the river or trampling all over the turnips.

Unfortunately, the game is written in interpreted BASIC, and the lack of speed and responsiveness makes it a chore to play. A brilliant idea, poorly executed.

1983 Virgin Games (UK)
by George Trezise

Although considered by Your Spectrum 1984 edition one of the "Misfires of the Year", I have to agree with Jonathan's review, this is in fact a really interesting idea only spoiled by it being written in BASIC.
It can be a bit annoying trying to lead the sheeps to the pen but with the right amount of patience it can be rather enjoyable especially for a young kid in 1982/83.

Piss poor effort in BASIC, that Virgin should have rejected. Although it was 1983, so probably normal for the time.

The authors music on side 2 of the tape was way better than the game.

But for all this is a shite game I really wish I still had my real copy of it.
