Reviews for Typhoon (#5493)

Decent conversion of the very cool coin-op.

Originally, the 48k multi-load version is a pain. At this version, one would have desired that F-15 stages were distributed differently around the game.. joining more similar stages per load. Some coin-op versions of this Typhoon a.k.a Ajax had different stages ordering.. so gamble with this issue in speccy version would've been intelligent.
Anyway, if you had 128k.. it loads the whole game at once and have AY sound and music. Good!

The heli sections are rather good, while differing in some details from the original arcade. All moves smoothly and fast.. even more smoothly and fast than FlyingShark and SWIV. Pitiful, gameplay lacks a bit of polishing, preventing to be a truly great arcade.

Cyan shoot'em up. In the first level you control a plane, viewed from behind, in costant nosediving through enemy fleets among the clouds until the sea and a ship are visibile.
Once you destroy the ship, simultaneously dodging all the missiles aimed at you, there's a helicopter level, with view from above, shooting dozens of enemy helicopters. And then I don't know. Unexciting but playable enough.

I hate the first stage in this game. It's a shoot 'em up viewed from behind, but I spend most of the time just dodging the enemy airplanes, not fun.
The next stages are different, and play, for instance like 1942. These are much better and play smoothly and can be quite fun, because the backgrounds and enemy bosses at the end of each stage are quite cool. There are a few more stages similar to the first, but better. Thankfully most are viewed from above and played using the helicopter.
Overall, this is a good conversion of an awesome coin-op, but somehow I don't think this games work well in the Spectrum, mostly due to the coloring, making them look the same, unlike the one's seem from the side, which allow a wider color scheme and more space for creativity.
