Reviews for Bomb Jack II (#619)

Review by zxspectrum128 on 11 Sep 2012 (Rating: 2)

Rather nice background graphics and smallish sprites make this game appear a little weaker than its splendid predecessor Bomb Jack.
What, however, kills addictiveness is the low level of playability.
Split second timing to jump from platform to platform take away the freedom of movement the original Bomb Jack had.
Add to that the frustration of the pretty hard difficulty level and you end up with nothing to write home about.

Best thing of my copy was, in fact, the free original Bomb Jack on the other side of the tape.
Avoid this and play the original instead!

While this sequel can't hold a candle to the first and great Bomb Jack, I believe it's not so awful as many seem to think. You must jump from platform to platform, collecting gold sacks and trying to fend off the baddies with a knife, which allows you eventually to push them off the platforms. A careful timing is essential to avoid them do the same to you.

Maybe if it had been released with a different title it would not have gotten the bad reputation it got.

People were expecting an upgrade of the excelent prequel and got only an average game.
Its still a fine game, highly playable and addictive, but the comparison with the first game is unavoidable making it almost impossible to rate it higher than an average score.

While not an overly terrible game it's far inferior compared to the brilliant original, it's rather like a bad haircut.

I get changing the gameplay, the graphics, the feel and the whole aspect of the game, but it just doesn't work very well. Unlike the original which I found very enjoyable and addictive I found Bomb Jack II to be incredibly tedious and largely annoying. It just lacks the addictiveness compared to the original. Gone is the free-flowing flying around the screen to collect bombs and in its place is the tedious nature of jumping from platform to platform...with awkward jumping it has to be said.

There's something about sequels in that they don't often work, Paperboy 2, Chase HQ II and here is Bomb Jack 2, all sequels of classic games and all of them are so far inferior to their original counterparts that they are largely best forgotten about.

The original Bomb Jack was brilliant, this sequel isn't.
I don't mind the changes to the gameplay, it's the pixel perfect timing that infuriatess. Success should be determined by skill, not luck.

A sequel too far, which is sad as it's only the second game in the series.

The original was great, unfortunately this isn't a patch on it, and also plays bugger all like it.

Bomb Jack II? More like crappy stabby gold grabbing man....Where's the Bombs? Where's the fun?

Alright it's not total shit but it's a severely weak effort in comparison to it's predecessor.

Nice backgrounds, it's just a pity that what's happening in the foreground is a trite and somewhat watered down experience. Realistically this game could have carried any name, could have been a stand alone game without anything to do with Bomb Jack, could've cost about 6 quid less, and it would have done fine I think.

As it stands it really is a total bunch of arse compared to just Bomb Jack.

Shame! It could have been so much better, if it ain't broken don't fix it, or in this case don't re-invent the wheel, and make it a Rhombus...

An absolute abomination if I ever saw one! This is horrid! Why change the gameplay completely into this horrible mess? The gameplay is what made Bomb Jack stand out and they changed it, and not for the better. Instead of flying across the screen collecting bombs we're now jumping onto platforms and killing enemies with a weapon, whether it's a sword or a stick I can't tell. And the graphics are atrocious as well! We had the pretty backgrounds and the nice use of colour in Bomb Jack 1 and now we have this murky look with enemies which I'm not even sure what they're supposed to look like. They took everything great from the first game and replaced it with complete crap. This is by far one of the worst sequels to ever exist.
