Reviews for Boulder Dash (#639)

Review by The Dean of Games on 25 Jun 2013 (Rating: 4)

1984 Front Runner (UK)
by Peter Liepa and Chris Gray

Not a game I personally enjoy, maybe because of the crude looking sprites, the jerky scrolling system and overall presentation of the game.
However Boulder Dash is indisputably one of the most addictive games ever.

Original idea but weird key disposition and rude graphics ... primitive and graceless .

I´m not very impressed with this ... should we say "classic" ??

2,5 out of 5 .

I'm not sure what's going on with the scrolling in this game. It gives me a headache as it jerks around trying to keep up with poor Rockford. You'll find yourself stopping to wait for the scrolling to catch up which isn't very good considering you're against the clock. If you're after a decent Boulderdash game you'd be better off with one of the sequels or indeed one of the many clones.

Impeccable.

So much better than the sum of its parts, this genre defining classic is absurdly addictive and offers beautifully balanced gameplay. Even the bad scrolling adds something to the tension.

One of the great games of the 8 bit era and because it was never reliant on graphics or sound to impress it has aged without withering.

Truth be told the Spectrum version of Boulder Dash did nothing for me. It is a good game BUT I stress that it's a good game depending on the system. The Spectrum port is ugly and bland.

Did I speak about unforgetable classics? Well put this also cos'it must be in high regard also.

Tons of hours, different plays, excellent replay value.
Mining and being careful with gravity, never so funny. Chasing foes, and freedom to trick them into traps, unforgetable.

an excellent arcade with a multitude of conversions, which attests to its success. Original arcade, tons of fun, always different replays with several modes of games.

As they said before me...Great gameplay, very addictive
And still playable!
...an arcade with puzzle features that you always want to play!

4.5/5

Although its maps are small, it is a pleasure to explore its varied caves, full of dangers and opportunities.
Like they said, if you don't depend on great graphics and sound to impress, it ages better.

ha ha ha damn game.
How many hours will I have stolen from the company in the office playing it secretly, taking care that no one saw me

EDIT:
not having to be the Spectrum version, of the many that there are, whether they are emulated or if they are on a mobile phone ... even in JAVA on an old but endearing nokia !!!
