Reviews for Chuckie Egg (#958)

Review by Stack on 12 Feb 2009 (Rating: 5)

Fast flowing platforms and ladders game that is automatic to pick up and play and provides really good entertainment.
Its high up in my pecking order that's for sure.

Released at around the same time as Manic Miner this would be the other candidate for the canonical Spectrum platform game.

They couldn't be much more different though; where Manic Miner is a game of precision movement and timing, Chuckie Egg has you hurling yourself around the screen at breakneck pace. Although there are patterns to be learned, and knowing how to apply the game mechanics precisely to each of the levels is very useful, the fact that you replay them with different sets of enemies makes it much more of a seat of the pants experience.

Although there was eventually a sequel, it unfortunately lost the feel that made the original such a great game, becoming more of a Jet Set Willy style arcade adventure. The original, however, can't be beaten and remains very playable.

Well, this game defines what "playability" is. Chuckie Egg was most played, most discussed game in my neighborhood. Every day somebody found a new move to jump one platform to another, find shortcuts to get 5 egg at one jump, and how to get pass thru platforms using jumps from ladders to ladders. Everybody was a master at playing Chuckie Egg, and speccy's rubber keys were well suited to play it actually.

The game does not require to be pixel perfect, even you can touch birds without losing a life, you can hit a elevator and bounce back to a platform, you can use screen borders to bounce around and make big jumps. if you are a master chuckie player there is no stopping for you, it's not a "stop and plan your move" game, it's a fast paced, non-stop running-jumping fun.

if you complete the game the game restarts but with mother duck released from his cage to chase you, so you can't stop anyway.

Excellent platformer, even today.

Ahhhh - chuckie egg , for me its one of the most nostalgic games out there for the spectrum , i can't think of many games that evoke such fond memories.

I think most people know the games format but for the uninitiated , its a fairly basic platform game , containing ladders , levels and lifts , with eggs and bird seed to collect , stopping you from having such an easy time are the hens which shift around the platforms fairly randomly , its all set against a bonus time clock and move along at a hectic pace.

Henhouse Harry is under your control , he zips around and climbs , jumps and runs with ease around the screen , he can bounce of platforms or lifts but if he falls too far or touches a hen , thats a life gone !

The graphics look quite simple nowadays but they do the job well , they are bright , well defined and smoothly done.

The game is highly addictive , there's a few ways it achieves this , it has the next screen factor and a high score table as well , i've actually never got beyond level 8 even after playing it for over 25 years but it's still one of those games that gets a dust down every few months. A classic .

**I lack the nostalgia feeling on this game because I haven't played it until the emulators era. I have played it again now just to see if I am missing something, but it's just another platform for me.**

I wrote this a while ago and gave this game 3 points. I have been playing this one again recently and I have really enjoyed the experience. It's very funny to play and somehow it got me stuck to my keyboard. Like Panama Joe, it has very simple graphics but very good gameplay.

One of the few games on the Spectrum that are well worth a Score of 5. Superbly balanced gameplay and that "just one more go" appeal combine to make this one of the best platform games of the era.

A fast placed platform game where the main character collected eggs whilst avoiding the birds.

The graphics were a bit flickery at times but the game was very addictive and fun to play.

The game got even better on the later levels when the bird came out the cage flying after the main character.

Moving platforms too which made the levels more entertaining.

Even better than Manic Miner.
This was a real fast arcade game where you had to think quickly, specially from level 9 on, when the crazy duck comes out of the cage after you! Brutal! Still a challenge. A classic.

One of the most addicting games I've ever played in my life, games like this never get old for me. This is just a fantastic game!

Chuckie Egg must be one of the best overrated games out there !! Yes , I know what I am saying ... :(

Colorful and charming but yet very far away from the sheer brilliance of Manic Miner .

A competent platformer with a character of its own . Not excellent , but quite good .

Collect the eggs, avoid the hens. There's not much more to it than that yet despite it's simplicity, I never seem to tire of it. Along with Rainbow Islands and Auf Wiedersehen Monty, the best platform game on the spectrum.

A quite fantastic game with gloriously addicting gameplay. A must play.

There is a real fluidity to this game that I believe is unmatched by any other platform game.

Sorry Matthew Smith, you're given far too much acclaim for Manic Miner and Jet Set WIlly. They're great and all...(but are they?) but THIS is the defining platformer on the Speccy.

Nigel Alderton: I salute you.

One of the classic and definitive platform games from the early days of the Spectrum.
Great fun to play, especially for the time. But objectively, this is extremely simple with terrible colour clash, woeful sounds and fiddly clunky control.
Like Manic Miner, I think many people view this game with huge nostalgia and the associated rose tinted glasses. Was considering a slightly lower score, but feared the lynching.

Very good platformer, although not one of my favourites.
