3D Stock Car Championship, 16 Aug 2009 (Rating: 4)

First impressions are pretty bad, terrible graphics and pathetic sound. And then you start to play...what can I say, it just plays right, allowing you to ignore the character square graphics and boring drone in the background. The game is pretty customisable, you can set the number of laps and the skill level of the computer opponents. Oh, and it's a simultaeneous two-player jobby as well, whats not to like? If you want a Super Sprint-alike on the Spectrum you can't go far wrong with this. Well worth the £1.99 it was originally.

Graphics 4/10
Sound 3/10
Playability 8/10

Note: Load in 48k mode.
This is a large wodge of text from the book with very occasional moments where you get a multiple choice to slightly direct the action. The point of the game is to make Adrian as popular as possible. It's a great attempt at text compression, a pisspoor attempt at a game with no replay value whatseoever. You'll be better off reading the book.
And if you play the Alternative budget reissue half the game is missing. A real waste of tape.

Night Gunner, 22 Aug 2009 (Rating: 3)

This is a 3d shooter, in which you're presumably a German, the attacking planes being Lancasters... It has 3 sections; firstly you have to aim and shoot down attacking Lancasters and barrage balloons, secondly you have a top down bit where you aim bombs at planes or tanks on the ground and thirdly another 3d bit where you dive bomb planes or tanks. Good for 1983, and OK for a quick blast, but it doesn't stand up all that well today.

Gauntlet, 22 Aug 2009 (Rating: 5)

Another game with dodgy graphics and sound, just play the thing, it's great. The object is to kill monsters, destroy monster generators, not get hit, eat food and drink, avoiding the poisoned drink, and get to the exit. The treasure rooms are bloody annoying though.

Adventure A: Planet of Death, 18 Sep 2009 (Rating: 3)

Planet of Death was one of the first text adventures for the 16k Speccy, converted from the ZX81. As such, it's very short (completable in 5 minutes once you know how), and has a limited two word verb noun parsar. Having said that, it's got atmosphere. Apart from one particularly evil puzzle it's a great adventure for beginners or for the younger adventurer.

Space Raiders, 22 Sep 2009 (Rating: 3)

This was Sinclair's own take on Space Invaders. It's a reasonable version, the main problem being that it never gets any harder.

Invaders, 04 Oct 2009 (Rating: 1)

Horible Space Invaders game with terrible UDG graphics, pathetic sound and rubbish gameplay. Avoid.

Alien Destroyer, 04 Oct 2009 (Rating: 1)

Terrible Galaxions game with flickery graphics, naff sound and the ability to fire your laser straight through the enemies without anything happening. And only the dive bombing aliens fire at you. Has the same enjoyment value of sticking forks in your eyes.

Rupert and the Ice Castle, 04 Oct 2009 (Rating: 3)

Platform game presumably for kids. Nice little effort if not top rank. Run about avoiding the nastys and sliding about on the icy patches to rescue your friends. Good waste of half an hour.

Out Run, 05 Dec 2009 (Rating: 4)

This is a driving game where you race against the clock. It's main difference is that the tracks fork at the end, so you get to choose your route, 15 different tracks in total.
This coin-op conversion got some mixed reviews and was generally considered a considerable letdown when it was released in 1987, so much so that I never played it at the time.
I'm honestly not sure why people were so upset with it, it wasn't as if the Spectrum really could do an arcade game like this justice. Having said that, it does look like the arcade, plays well (dodgy collision detection aside), and isn't anywhere near as slow as I'd been led to expect. I recommend it. The multiload is a pain though, but at least on the 128k it remembers the levels you've been to.

Monsters in Hell, 10 Jan 2010 (Rating: 2)

Fairly terrible Panic type game with UDG graphics that move in character blocks. This game strongly smells of compiled basic.

Alcatraz Harry, 03 Apr 2010 (Rating: 1)

Well, it loaded, I think that's the only positive that comes to mind with this one. Rubbish sound, appalling flickery graphics and it all runs at the speed of a sedated sloth. You're in that well known pow camp Alcatraz(?) and have to find 30 items to help you escape from the 144 screens that make up the game and then take them back to the start location. Which is in the South of the game map. You then have to trail your way back to the top (whilst avoiding any guards that will shoot your head off), cross a minefield and at last escape. I'd love to know if anyone has ever completed this game, it makes watching Eastenders sound like fun.
