Re: No Chaos on other 8bit Systems?
We had a Chaos inspired game on the SAM Coupe: "Mage*Fire". First released briefly in 1996 and re-released it on the cover disk with issue 26 of SAM Revival magazine in the mid-2000s so it's still available.

Just to resurrect this old post to say I am still making all the cartridge related hardware, include a range of different colours of cartridges.

Re: How long have you been part of the Speccy Retro Scene?
I guess I have been around the scene for ages, even if just lurking every so often! I was bought my first ZX Spectrum (48K) in 1983, upgraded to the +2 in 1986 when it launched. While I did get my first SAM Coupe which became my main machine of choice in 1993 I had been online since late 1991 so I'd...

Re: PROJECT : A TRS80 MC10 emulator on the ZX Spectrum
Because I did some emulation on the SAM too and a portal can be made??? I am just a fan of seeing an 8-bit machine emulate another, especially when there is a different CPU to be emulated as the programming and ingenuity behind the emulation engines to get best speed is very complex coding. So I ap...

Watching this with interest! I enjoy reading about your emulation of other systems.

Re: When did the Spectrum scene hit rock bottom?
Oh, that's easy: for me, personally, it was when the last of the Spectrum-specific magazines ceased publication, when the multiformat mags stopped covering Spectrum games and, finally, when the last of the publishers stopped supporting the Spectrum. It was a dark day when I saw the last issue of Yo...

Re: Hypothetically... The Empire Strikes Back on the Spectrum
Yes. With MODEs 2, 3 and 4 you have the full speed. But you are right in that you will then be moving four times the bytes so it will end up being slowerflatduckrecords wrote: ↑Tue Aug 22, 2023 11:26 am MODE 3 should also benefit from the speedup though? (If that's not nerf'd by the extra gruntwork!)

Re: Hypothetically... The Empire Strikes Back on the Spectrum
I've modified @Joefish's code to work on SAM, hopefully it's helpful! Cool to see! A potential tweak would be to adapt it to MODE 2. It'll be the same number of bytes to shift around, with the screen being mapped linearly rather than the ZX Spectrum way in MODE 1. The benefit would be a bit of a sp...

Re: NEXT Update
I'm still somewhat bemused by the Next. I backed the dev board on the first Kickstarter so have had that sitting here since December 2017. It was my initial thinking that I should port across a couple of the unique and unusual games from the SAM Coupe to see how they do with a new audience, choosing...

Re: Popular SAM Coupé Misconceptions
I find this particularly frustrating. It really is. No research, no accountability, no desire to correct the narrative when mistakes are highlighted. All to easy to ignore or cite "research oversights" and with the majority of readers of these general retro publications they won't be SAM ...

Re: Popular SAM Coupé Misconceptions
As far as I can tell, the only exception to this is when using the ZX-Ecutor interface from Quazar, which allows ZX Spectrum Interface II carts to run on the SAM. There are two options, one runs at original Spectrum speed, the other runs at full SAM speed. Yes. The ZX ROM cartridges don't use the i...

Commercial Quazar: https://www.samcoupe.com/ - hardware, software, replacements, repairs & spares, upgrades, and a printed magazine. *Flying the flag for SAM... with a new machine built using the custom SAM chip on the horizon at some point Admittedly I've been too quiet around forums, so a bel...

Re: New Interface 2 games
Looks like you've been busy with more releases - catching up with the ones I've missed, the four from June last year with Manic Miner all work on the SAM via my ZX-ECUTOR interface. The POKE menu with MM is a very nice addition, excellent work! Looking forward to trying JSW when the latest batch are...

Re: Why did you NOT upgrade to a C64 in the 80s?
It’s possible to get a SID to work with an Acorn BBC B, but I don’t know if anyone has tried to get an original SID to work with a Z80 based system. Yes. @flatduckrecords already mentioned one of my interfaces, but I started back in 2002 with a SID sound chip interface specifically for the SAM Coup...

Re: New Interface 2 games
I saw 9 more of your patched games went live on Paul's Fruitcake site. Nice work. Just popped them on my Flash cartridge, all work fine both on ZX Spectrum with my Interface 2 compatible ROM Slot Interface and my 16 bank flash cartridge. Also all working without issues on the SAM Coupe via my ZX-ECU...

Re: New Interface 2 games
Brilliant, looking forward to seeing these and more with the new compression. Checking on a real SAM (as the true bus behaviour doesn't seem to be emulated from running the same tests on an emulator) the bus isn't stable when reading in from an unused I/O port (such as 31 or 127 as you asked). The d...

Re: ZX Spectrum ROM Cartridge + Interfaces from Quazar
Hi,
Yes, the 16 Bank ZX ROM cartridge can be used with the Interface Two.
It's not programmable via the ZX Spectrum, you would have to pop the flash chip out of the socket and program it in an EPROM burner.

Re: ZX Spectrum ROM: Arcade Game Designer
I've it running on my ZX Spectrum + and the SAM Coupe via my ZX ROM Cartridge hardware. Tested initially as it was new ROM based software, but I perhaps should give it a whirl sometime to try and make a simple game with it to see what it's like. Back in the 80s / early 90s I had tried to create game...

Re: New Interface 2 games
That's some brilliant work Jimmy! Just been trying a couple of them out on my flash cartridge with ZX-ECUTOR on the SAM Coupé. Horace, Trashman, Stop the Express and Pinball working brilliantly. Only odd ones on the SAM I've found so far is Zolyx, where the cursor just moves to the bottom of the scr...
