Re: Lara Croft voted most iconic character ever

It's been also said about Master Chief earlier, but tbh I'm not sure where does this notion come from. Both these characters have very strong identity, (visual, at least) and the fact that they don't say much or that MC is wearing a helmet doesn't stop me (and clearly a lot of other people) from re...

Re: Lara Croft voted most iconic character ever

I'd think the key thing was that they polled 4000 gamers . You know what they're like. Of course they're going to pick the hot woman with the big tits. The one I'm most surprised by is Agent 47 in third place. I've enjoyed some of the games in the series but the character is about as much of a...

1. The Colour of Magic 2. Bored of the Rings 3. Mindfighter There's something to recommend about all of them though, and I particularly admire his progression from parody into just telling great stories. The Colour of Magic wins out for introducing me to the works of Terry Pratchett. There aren't a ...

Re: DenOfGeek : The games that defined the Spectrum

Yeah, it's a list long on consensus favorites and short on personal picks. I'm probably too well versed in the classic Spectrum library to get totally surprised these days but I'd like to see at least one game on there that's obviously an author's pick. If I was writing it myself, I'd go with someth...

Re: Devfinitive Edition (Fergus McNeil): discussion

A lot of the others are multi-part games, so you definitely don't want to be splitting those up as well. I liked the way you could save your game at the end of one part and load it into the next. It's an obvious trick when you know how tools like The Quill work, and helps get around the tight memory...

WIzard's Lair looks nice, like a mix between Atic Atac and Sabre Wulf, but I never got on with it. Laser Snaker is pretty good fun but a lot simpler than the later games.

Pinball Wizard has better physics but the ability to edit the table is what makes Macadam Bumper. Either way, it's their standout game.

I'm struggling to come up with enough for a top three though. They did some great games for the Amstrad CPC but those never seem to have made it to the Spectrum.

Re: Fake history

You could fake a game as though it was made during the 80s easily enough. Without the documentary evidence to back it up though, it's kinda pointless. If there are no magazine adverts or articles referring to it, nobody's going to care. That just leaves a very small set of games that were advertised...

There's a third Exxos game, Kult, for the 16-bit platforms.

Mostly the same people went on to found Cryo Interactive, who were a lot more successful and kept making games until the mid-2000s. A lot of that interesting quirkiness did come off though.

I'll go for Purple Saturn Day on the grounds that I've at least got a clue as to some of what's happening in it.

Captain Blood, on the other hand, is one of those games which looks outstanding but seems utterly inscrutable to play.

The top three are pretty close and the order could be different on any given day.

1. Combat Lynx
2. Turbo Esprit
3. Scuba Dive

Honorable mentions go to Harrier Attack and Thanatos.

Jungle Trouble is the only real duffer. I'd take the magazine type-in over that game.

Re: Drastic Nintendo DS Emulator for Android currently free

It certainly sounds like it'll be an uncomfortable time for anyone who charges money for a Nintendo emulator.

If they're going to go after anyone else though, it'll probably be Ryujinx first.

Re: Drastic Nintendo DS Emulator for Android currently free

That's a top notch emulator that works especially well with the Retroid handhelds. I paid for it a few years back and have had absolutely no regrets with it.

I wonder if the decision to go free was prompted by the recent Nintendo vs Tropical Haze lawsuit.

I don't understand, aren't games like Captain Blood not by Infogrames? Yes, at least in the Ocean/Imagine sense where you had two labels owned by the same company. Captain Blood was made by ERE Informatique, who got bought out by Infogrames just prior to the game being released and promptly rebrand...

Re: The 20 games with a <= 10% rating from all three major ZX Spectrum magazines

I thought Battlecars was pretty good. There are Crash Smashes that I'd consider worse than it even. It is, of course, a very niche game being an adaptation of a tabletop board/dice game that ideally needs two players, and not exactly the most intuitive thing to pick up and play. Also, Julian Gollop ...

They still exist and some time ago they changed name to Atari but they aren't Atari, my feeling is that they hadn't "moral right" to do it :) There's a company called Atari, but they're not even Infogrames at this point, as they went bankrupt in 2013, closing down all their studios and se...

I'd also point out that most of the bugs move quite predictably, so are easy to take out once you've got good at anticipating where the bombs will land. There are only a few on each level that flutter around randomly and they can be left until you've dealt with the others.

I enjoyed Frank Bruno's Boxing back in the day, but looking at it now it's practically a who's who of racist caricatures. Get past the first few though and they're not just straight knock-offs of the characters from Punch Out, I suppose. Er... anyway... 1. Bomb Jack 2. Wild West Hero 3. Grand National
