Re: Cybernoid clones?

Explorer by the RamJam Corp. was definitely inspired by Cybernoid. Same flick-screen action and detailed graphics but only one level. Sprites were large and colourful too.

Re: Cybernoid clones?

I'd say a most likely candidate was Cybernoid 2.

Re: Sabre Wulf standard case inlay

But when he say 'jewel', what does he mean? Some very, very rare cassette cases were cut from single (very large) rubies and emeralds, and in the case of the really expensive version of Sabre Wulf, diamond. They were limited-run, only ten or so of each title were made and usually went to private co...

Re: Inverted Y origin

In tight situations where you have a lot to draw, drawing top-down means you can more efficiently race the raster. Drawing from the bottom up means you must ensure that you've got enough time to draw the whole sprite before the beam catches up. Other than that, there's no real issues that I can thin...

For Linux? no. You'll need to use WINE. BASin comes with a screen paintbox, and that does work with WINE.

Re: Poll: Atic Atac or Sabre Wulf?

Atic Atac could be completed, with practise. Sabre Wulf had too many things that would kill you unfairly, like indestructible creatures that you can't get past when they're in your way, and being unable to use your sword up or down the screen. All of those things can be worked around though - the l...

Re: 'Dixel' scrolling... Ghosts 'n' Goblins

Pre-shifting offloads much of the work in a scrolling game to outside of the game loop. For example: You are scrolling from right to left. You draw a column of blocks at the right hand edge of the screen, and then you literally process every single byte in the display - rotating the bits in each byt...

Re: 'Dixel' scrolling... Ghosts 'n' Goblins

The word "Dixel" is indeed a thing and does mean a two-pixel scroll. I never heard of it in the context of the aforesaid game, but it does crop up in a type-in on page 74 of issue 19 of Your Sinclair. Hmm... I suppose it's possible that my addled mind got it mixed up and it wasn't in relation to Gn...

Re: Spectrum namedrops...

Back in 2000ish I discovered that I lived literally round the corner from none other than Woodster, the legendary Speccy emulator coder! I sh*t you not, that was probably the best thing to happen that day.
