Re: The best classic Speccy game beginning with R: vote

This has to be the most difficult one yet! As much as I think R-Type is a masterpiece I never really enjoyed playing it all that much (too hard) - but I was really spoilt by playing the PC Engine version at the same time (which was nigh-on arcade-perfect). Loved Roller Coaster, Robin Of The Wood, Re...

Re: The best classic Speccy game beginning with Q: vote

Went for Quazatron - no contest really. It's not only by a country-mile the best Q game in the list, it's one of the best ever Speccy games (arguably it's greatest isometric game) and in the running as one of the greatest 8-bit games of all time - across all platforms. I think it's also a better gam...

Re: Have you ever completed a text adventure?

I was quite into text adventures back in the day and completed several. Off the top of my head: Invincible Island The Hobbit Rigel's Revenge Seabase Delta The Price of Magik Heavy on the Magick (despite the moving graphics, it is really a text adventure) Scapeghost (probably my all-time fave - Level...

Quest Adventure by Hewson
Quest for the Holy Grail by Mastertronic
Quill, The by Gilsoft (I know this is specifically for "games" so maybe not. It was a hugely important release in the Speccies history though).

Re: Race games - how is it done?

If you've ever seen Electraglide on an 8-bit Atari it looks absolutely stunning, with a colourful fast-running road leading to the horizon. But really it's just a flat picture of a triangular road. The road moving is done by colour-swapping on alternate lines, and the curves are done by scroll-shif...

Re: unfortunate typo in crash magazine issue#1

I believe it's the correct spelling. We're all so familiar with its terminology as a sexual crime, but it also means "to plunder" and if you read the sentence in that context it makes more sense. Not very PC but I guess that was in a day and age when that didn't matter as much.

Went for Popeye. Always impressed the hell out of me and was one of the few games I managed to complete.

Re: The best classic Speccy game beginning with O: vote

I went for The Oracle's Cave. I have really fond memories of the day I got my Speccy, Xmas '83, and spending hours playing it with my mum. Never did manage to complete it. Second would have been Operation Wolf (one of the last Speccy games I ever bought), followed by Olli and Lissa which was a damn ...

Re: Which games really pushed the Speccy?

Starglider and Carrier Command - astonishingly both are as good, if not better, than the 16-bit originals. Popeye and Trapdoor - Shunting those massive, colourful sprites around must have been pushing the Speccy to its limits. Chase H.Q. - how on earth he made it that playable still boggles my mind ...
