Re: Capacitors

What type of bit are you using on your iron? A chisel tip is what I recommend. Is the tip clean? Did you "tin" it? For normal tracks/pads, an 18W Antex should be okay. But is not very useful for the thicker tracks, like those used for the power supply or ground (0V) circuits. I use a Antex...

Re: Capacitors

You do not need 9V, when using a regulated power supply, since it will make up for the extra power when it is requested. The required minimum voltage for the 7805 to work is 7.5 Volts. Everything above 7.5V is usually dissipated as heat, so not useful. If you do not have any extra peripherals, chew...

Re: Capacitors

What are the risks of running this machine using the original 1980's capacitors? If I invest 60-70 quid on an IDE/MMC device, do the old capacitors pose a real risk to damaging the add-on? The biggest risk with a ZX Spectrum 16k, 48k (or Plus), is an electrolytic capacitor in the DC/DC converter fa...

Re: Could Amstrad have made tapes play faster?

Err, both the Z80A and the 6502 (the 2MHz version) can actually "load" data to RAM from a high speed serial stream much faster than most people think. And Sinclair had already come up with a "high speed" loading system - the microdrive :P Amstrad however, with the ZX Spectrum lin...

Re: Cannot edit older posts.

Having read through all the posts in this thread, regardless of the "why not at any time" vs. having a restriction, I don't recall any reason why two hours was chosen as the limit. I can understand having a restriction. But would much prefer the time limit to be a bit longer. Two hours is ...

* Yes, Toni is a woman, and contrary to certain rumours, not transgender. The speculation about transgender almost certainly comes about due to some early print runs of Mastering Machine Code on Your ZX81 with the author as "Tony Baker". In later editions, the author was "Toni Baker&...

Re: ZX Spectrum Next

Any news on when a 2nd round of orders might start..? or when the next schematic is made available to clones? That I don't know. But hopefully everyone who ordered a PCB only, or a PCB with the rest to follow, should now have their PCB. I understand that some PCBs have been held up within the vario...

Re: World of Spectrum....

One BIG concern I have over WoS right now, and I see this echoed from many sources recently is that all resources, be it manuals, schematics, publisher history, etc. is that it's being placed in a manner where there is a notable sense of gatekeeper access, trying to wall off information into a clos...

We all share the same concerns about WoS decline and all the valuable information it contains. Err, you have Martijn to thank for the decline of WoS. When he found true love, he more or less abandoned updates on WoS. And then after the site trundled on for a number of years, the server became unrel...

Re: Screen switching, does it happen?

Yes, with the 128k machines the hardware is capable of displaying a screen from one of two available banks. See here for more info... The main limitation is that the normal screen memory stays in the normal place in the Z80 memory map (0x4000 and 0x7fff) and can't be paged out of this area. This doe...

If it has never been a commercial product, hence there is no price, then would it be better to show "N/A"?
The licence should be shown separately. Then you could have a hyperlink to a definition (like you currently have).

Re: Should every new game be released with an infy lives option?

We have less time for Speccy games these days, and a google times more distractions. Most people play in an emulator with snapshots, hacking is easier than ever, and POKEs usually appear within a few days of release. Is it even worth trying to design a game around a limited number of lives anymore?...

Thanks for the link 8-) That indeed is one of the better Christmas tunes.
