Re: The best unplayable demo on a YS/Crash/SU covertape: vote

It wasn't very bad to find a top 3, but it's still stretching... 1) Barbarian 2... Because despite it being a rolling demo, I remember back in the day I found it was easy to hack the demo and made it playable. Unfortunately I was still not good at the game after I could play it. So therefore I'd vot...

Re: Context-sensitive buttons in ZX Spectrum game...?

Well, of course my game Heart Stealer had also an one key version . Although this was so long ago, I can't remember what kind of things it does. Probably different kind of jumps. But yeah, as the Spectrum Joystick only has one button, almost every single game has context sensitive buttons. Basically...

Re: Learning C games dev for the ZXN

Have you uploaded the code to your DEFB image converter tool anywhere? Hopefully its written in C and not z80 so that I might have a chance of understanding how it works. It's not written in C, because I used languages that can easily access pixels from images. C is not very useful there. To be hon...

Re: Learning C games dev for the ZXN

My guess is that I will need to turn the images into C header file data but I dunno what tool might be best for doing that? Maybe there's a better way? I usually write my own tool converting image data into DEFB. But I understand there is also an assembly directive called INCBIN "filename.dat&...

I will be really busy for a while, so if someone else wants to test this, I wouldn't mind.

Re: Suggestion :Developers please try to also create Appimages for linux

So what you're saying is that win32 isn't the magical solution for everything. We didn't say that. There will always be something that might not be working. It's like emulators (wine isn't an emulator), just because there is an emulator it doesn't mean it can handle everything. I also have some win3...

Re: Suggestion :Developers please try to also create Appimages for linux

I also use Linux, and I have found I don't like building stuff. But that's mostly because I don't use a regular distribution and sometimes half of the things they require are just not available. For example, I never managed to compile Zesareux (or whatever it was called) so I ended up with Fuse. Whi...

Again, if people don't pick this up on the dedicated discussion thread then it leads to these situations where polls go live with mistakes in them. I'm gonna have to declare any vote for Head The Ball null and void and wonder about rerunning the exclusive game poll... or not. Well, we've had simila...

Re: Questions about gamedev in an emulator...

So, do I use *.z80 for snapshots instead? I haven't do that much testing with z80 files, because I still prefer the simple format of sna files. And perhaps for gamedev purposes, sna files could just be fine too. If you have to generate a file yourself, then sna is easier. If you let an emulator to ...

Re: Questions about gamedev in an emulator...

sna files are from a very old design, and I would not suggest people to use them if possible in 2024. (Unless you have no other choice, like I sometimes have to, in some of my own projects.)

But at least it's a simple looking* format.

Re: The best reader-submitted game on a YS/Crash/SU covertape: vote

Too many great games to choose, so here's just a random top 3. 1. Riptoff . This is just such a brilliant game. Go play it if you've never played it before, now. 2. Peking . This is a simple puzzle game but I still played it lots. Great presentation, somehow. It's really hard to do a good game using...

Re: What is the best emulator to run on Puppy Linux and similar distros?

I used to run fuse on puppy, so I don't really see a problem with spectrum emulation at all.

Of course puppy is usually used on slower computers, but if you know how to use it then it's not a problem.

Nowadays I'd prefer running on a newer computer and a more powerful distribution though.

Re: Guardian article on the best video games magazines

For me, because my exposure to them were mainly the later period. YS stood out because of the writing. The irrelevance of it. The covertapes were usually okay. SU was fine. They had a lot of programming related articles (that I would still recommend from time to time), and probably the best cover ta...

I think, if I remember correctly, it's like most spectrum platformers, but easier. Probably that's why we don't have much use for these.

But there might be people who wants to play them on an 8 bit computer, though.

Yeah, their mail address thing has been broken for as far as i can remember.

This is why I came here, as I lost my old email, and changing it on some other site doesn't work.

I'm not holding my breath for that being fixed any more.

Re: Bank switching issue

It's only complicated because of your setup.

If you put your stack and interrupt related stuff in bank 2, then you can skip half of the steps.

But it's really not a big deal if you keep your stuff in bank 0.

I also wonder if anything from the Shaws, or the Shaw Brothers should be here either.

Especially as we just had the Iron Soldier thing in the other poll already.

Re: The best exclusive game from a recognised brand on a YS/Crash/SU covertape: vote

I'm going to base this one based on how much I've played back in the day instead of how good it was. :) 1. Hyper Active. Given that, importantly, this being one of the first cover tapes I got (Batty wasn't released outside UK until much, much later), it was a good, simple game with lots of demo effe...

Lots of nice stuff in here. 1. Cybernoid 2, obviously. I remember playing the demo and loved it. I probably don't have to explain why. 2. Rex. The demo was not as good as the real game, and it took me a while to get over that. Because it really did not made me want to get it. 3. Stormlord demo was r...

Re: Music files in SC and other sites. Permission affair.

Perhaps we should automatically block all AY files for games released in the last N years (10? 15?) and keep the others available, unless the author declares otherwise. I feel that N is perhaps still too flexible. My current preference is to have a cut off date like the year 2000, (unless the autho...
