Re: New multi platform emulator - Speculator

This looks great! One question, however: How does one load a multi-load game like R-type? After side 1 loads, it asks to flip to side 2, which I obviously can’t do. Interestingly, the same .tap fie loads up straight to the game on Fuse. I like the simplicity of this new emulator, but I can’t figure ...

Re: Snapshots in Fuse MacOS

I believe this was fixed in the new v1.6.0 version as it has this in the release note The Mac port by Fredrick Meunier is still on the older v1.5.6 so you are going to have to compile from source to get this to work. I've done this and it works fine and in fact I find it better as you can do some t...

Re: BASIC Programming workflow on MAC

Not the best option, but you can try zxcoder.org. It's main advantage is that is web based and you can work from anywhere (tablet etc) . I use it in conjuction with pastebin or other similar sites to always have my work online and accesible from anywhere. It boggles my mind how well-made and conven...

Re: Snapshots in Fuse MacOS

Sadly, these weren’t the solutions. Turns out that .szx files are default. As are the joystick settings for snapshots. I’ll keep fiddling with it, but in case anyone else has some suggestions, I’m all ears.

Snapshots in Fuse MacOS

I’m a bit of an emulator noob, so I was hoping for some help on how snapshots work. I have Fuse for MacOS on my MacMini with an M1 chip. I want to practice a particular level of R-Type. I play up to that stage, and just before it starts, I save a snapshot. When I load the snapshot, sure enough the l...

Re: R-type question

Mostly you really need to play this level keeping ahead of, and below, the centre of the screen. That way things hurtling down the middle of the screen will pass behind you, but you have to be ready to fire on anything coming at you head-on. Also practise using a charged shot and try to time it so ...

Thanks for sharing these! I’m presently obsessed with R-Type. I devoured Pape’s book and I can’t wait to hear the man himself talk about his magnum opus. Much appreciated!

Re: R-type question

OP asking for help here: So, I am in week three of my challenge. I can get to level 4 without dying, but I am finding it absolutely impossible to make it more than a quarter through the level. I come in with all the power ups guns blazing, but once I die and restart at the beginning with nothing, I ...

Apologies for resurrecting this thread but it came up when searching for Filmation. Thanks for this! I, too, am fascinated by Filmation. Would you mind sharing some of your sources, please? That is, what exactly are you studying to help you understand the engine? I would love to study it further my...

Re: R-type question

If your DivMMC's version of esxDOS is up to date you should have Nihirash's dot-command called SCL2TRD, e.g. .scl2trd <filename>.scl That will run for a few minutes (and generate <filename>.trd). A quicker route might be to open the disk image in an emulator and re-save it in TRD format (Fuse suppo...

Re: R-type question

if you have a DivMMC try R-Type GT on a real speccy ,it's a SCL file but can be converted to TRD. The 128k music and effects really do the business. https://youtu.be/La-lQ5MGgr8?si=2ILZ8g0Dr3QeY_EY Nice, I do have a DivMMC. But, I will have to research file conversion. This is not an aspect I'm fam...

Re: R-type question

It matters, you need angle laser. Defeating the first level boss this way is very easy, just stay and shoot. https://i.postimg.cc/21Zn8BPS/R-Type-1988-Activision-a4-full-wout-lost-300720-122319.jpg Excellent, thanks! This is the trick I needed! Now I can start strategizing Level 2. I've been cruisi...

Re: R-type question

An easier way is to stand in the corner at the bottom left of the screen and shoot the boss with a laser. This way you won't damage the boss's top eye (losing all the eyes will cause the boss to move towards you). I'm at work so I will try this later, but does it matter if it is the angle laser or ...

Good luck.

Without any poke I can reach level 4. To finish it... only with pokes.
Thanks! Getting halfway through the game is pretty good without pokes!

Re: R-type question

I tried playing R-Type, Zynaps, Chronos, Fliyng Shark with the DualShock 4 using the 8bitDo Retro Adapter.... Oh! The analog stick in these games is heaven and earth compared to a regular joystick and even more so to a keyboard. I’m going to try a NES style game pad today. I find it easier to shoot...

Re: R-type question

Are you playing with keys or joystick? It’s best with keys. I used to use a curious combination of z, x, k, n, l to fire and space for the force. Controversial, I know but somehow I’d get further than using q, a, o, p and either n, m or space. At my peak I could get to level 5 on my first life but ...

Re: R-type question

I completed R-Type (all 8 levels) without cheats after almost 2 months of regular play, but on my emulator, and I trained with rollbacks. And I knew how to pass levels 1-3 from my youth. Nice. Congrats. Did you play The Hit Squad release? Is that version fixed? After 4 days I’ve beaten level one on...

R-type question

My goal is to beat R-Type within the month of February. I’ve never played the game before on the Speccy and I just bought it on tape. No emulator and no cheat codes. I aim to play it as it was back in the day. Any of you guys finish the game without POKEs? If so, how long did it take you? If not, ho...

Re: Keyboard faceplate question

Both the plastic case and the metal faceplate must be totally clean of any previous glue or adhesive. So clean until all traces have been removed. Use really good quality double sided tape. And apply it around all the edges where you can fit it. But before sticking it down, do a "dry" fit...

Keyboard faceplate question

I feel a little silly asking this when all the other topics here are about much more technical issues, but here goes: I bought a replacement keyboard faceplate for my rubber key 48k and I am having the hardest time getting it to stick down properly with double sided tape. It always pops up around th...

Re: HiSoft C programmers?

OP here. Thanks to everyone for their input! This turned into quite the debate! But I’ll now be checking out _dw’s FORTH compiler and dfzx’s C Programming Getting Started Guide. I mucked around with HiSoft C last night, and I agree that it’s probably best considered a learning tool.
