It's not like night missions added much to XCOM anyway, they just reduced line of sight a bit and made the game a little bit harder.

Re: Secrets of Castle Madness - Grid based dungeon crawler

Your game looks great in its early stages! It looks like exactly my kind of party rpg in the first person of sorts, you just don't get them anymore, I don't like isometric perspective rpgs. Are you going to crowdfund it or sell it on itchio etc? I would buy it as it stands now. Any chance of 6 char...

Re: Secrets of Castle Madness - Grid based dungeon crawler

This looks great @kingius, thanks for sharing. Looking forward to hearing more about it! Are you still developing directly on your Spectrum? How is that going? Thanks for the comments, appreciated! Yes I'm still developing directly on the Spectrum itself. Development is going well I think. My proce...

Secrets of Castle Madness - Grid based dungeon crawler

Here is what I've been working on since my wife picked me up a Spectrum +2A for my birthday: a brand new grid based dungeon crawler called The Secrets of Castle Madness. This is an early shot of the exploration side of the game, where you wander the halls in first person view. https://i.postimg.cc/r...

Re: Are amiga games bad?

Amiga had many great games. I consider it a gaming machine. I will mention one game : Chaos Strikes Back. After that there is a great list of good games (many of them already mentioned) Also we had Protracker... Yes you're right, and it's prequal Dungeon Master is considered by many to be a genre d...

Re: Are amiga games bad?

XCOM looks like ripoff for poor people after PC version, even with speedup patch. Big problem is absence of night missions... Hired guns is a real bomb. Wrong on both counts, XCOM was a great conversion and me and my friends spent many hours on the Amiga version. Apart from smoke and some disk swap...

Re: Are amiga games bad?

Also playing later, big games like Xcom or Dune2 on Amiga was a nightmare because you had to swap diskettes all the time and wait for loading. As for swapping disks... well it was Street Fighter 2 that I think was the worse conversion. Up to 3 disks might be needed for just playing one fight! Ouch....

--- Hired Guns, Pool of Radiance, Black Crypt, Gods, XCOM, Space Hulk, Lords of Chaos, Moonstone.---- Yes moonstone was an absolute classic. I played Black Crypt..it was ok but seemed to be one huge puzzle. I got to a certain level and the game seemed broken. I only played XCOM on the PC so dont kn...

blucey wrote: Mon Jun 05, 2023 3:22 pm The Amiga was very hit and miss but we only really knew that because everyone had 100s of copied games so you got a lot of good and a lot of chaff.

For me it was great, just for the likes of SWOS, Civilization, Syndicate, King's Bounty and quite a few others.
Syndicate! Another great game. :-)

Re: Are amiga games bad?

No, Amiga games were not bad, haha!

Take a look at such gems as Hired Guns, Pool of Radiance, Black Crypt, Gods, XCOM, Space Hulk, Lords of Chaos, Moonstone... and that's just a few off the top of my head that were all awesome on the platform.

Calling .tapein from machine code

I was wondering if anybody had ever successfully called the .tapein extended BASIC command from Spectrum Basic machine code? I'm considering using the SD Card (divMMC) to load in some extra graphics in at run time. I'm making an RPG and this could be potentially useful so I could show more portraits...

Masochist!
Thanks for the kind words, I work on the game every day so will get it done... and really it's not that bad to develop on the Spectrum... fewer distractions! :)

Re: The best top 10 best spectrum games ever list ever.

I take your lists and RPG and strategize them to the max. Don't forget about these massive gems which pushed the Spectrum to its limits back in the day and were very cleverly programmed to provide many, many hours of gameplay in their amazing little worlds... Chaos (8 player game, so simple but so m...

Re: Game of the day...

My wife and I are playing the Bards Tale every Friday evening. We get the beers in and get stuck in to one of the most difficult dungeon crawlers ever devised... quite amazing that this was ported to our humble Spectrum. The game itself is party based, has multiple classes, hundreds of spells and it...

Introductions

Hi there, the forum says 'introduce yourself' so here I am. I'm a software engineer that started to program as a kid on the Spectrum 48k! Recently my wife, unexpectedly, bought me a Spectrum +2 with Robocop and a few other games. In my collection I already had the Bards Tale from years prior, pickin...

Re: Spectrum with 100% new parts (nearly)

Youtube actually recommended this for me to watch through it's algorithm and it was pretty fun. I'm guessing that your Spectrum will last a really long time now it has all new parts (but one); although to be fair existing Spectrums are lasting a long time already, but in 2060s yours may still be goi...

Re: AI art generators and Spectrum graphics

You can convert any modern image to a 256x192 ZX Spectrum SCREEN$ by using imagetozxspec , easily imported into a Speccy via .tzx/.tap/whatever. Thanks for letting me know about this. Giving it a few photos though and it seems to do an okay job on backgrounds (trees and such) but completely obliter...
