Re: Lemmings on the Next
I have successfully used LemConv under Windows 10 to generate the Lemmings Next data files. I copied the contents of the lemdat folder into the lemdat subdir of the Lemmings source then: ~/src/Lemmings$ mono snasm.exe -map _LemmingsNext.asm _LemmingsNext.dat SNasm V3.2.3.0 (c) Copyright 1999-2023 Mi...

Re: Lemmings on the Next
Turns out I had no need to install Visual Studio under Windows. I was able to build LemConv.exe under Debian ~/src/Lemmings/LemConv/LemConv$ msbuild LemConv.csproj Microsoft (R) Build Engine version 16.10.1 for Mono Copyright (C) Microsoft Corporation. All rights reserved. Build started 23/05/2024 1...

Re: Lemmings on the Next
I have updated my github ticket with flatduck's build instructions and asked Mike if he could add a LemConv.exe to the repo to spare people having to install VisualStudio just to build it: https://github.com/mikedailly/Lemmings/issues/1 If we can't upload zip files to this forum then can someone kin...

Re: Lemmings on the Next
Thanks flatduckrecords! That seems to be pretty complete instructions for building Lemmings for the Next. The key missing bit of info for me was that I didn't know where to download snasm until you told me its included with CSPect. So the only thing standing between me playing Lemmings on the Next n...

Re: Learning C games dev for the ZXN
It seems the Scorpion Engine now has, or it will have soon, Neo Geo support. I think its unlikely they'll add Next support to the Scorpion engine as its probably too different from the MD/Amiga/Neo Geo, not being a m68k machine but I've asked the dev if they've considered adding Next support. Will l...

Re: Learning C games dev for the ZXN
Does anyone on this forum have experience in writing games in C on the Amiga and writing games in C for the ZXN? I'd like to know how the two compare. I expect it should be quite a bit easier to write a game in C on the Amiga today with its larger amounts of RAM and faster CPU combined with stuff li...

Re: Lemmings on the Next
I asked Jim Bagley if he has a build of Lemmings as he says not.
I have contacted Neil RMC to see if he has a copy. He does own a Next and the worlds only Lemmings arcade machine so he seems like my only other chance here.
OH NO!

Re: Porting the MEGA65 to the Next
I naively presumed that Paul would know which FPGAs the Next models used but it seems he wasn't sure about that so I have wrote back to him asking if he thinks the Spartan 6 (KS1/XBP) could handle the M65 too? I've not got my hopes up but he might suggest a way it could be made to work? It doesn't s...

Re: Porting the MEGA65 to the Next
Paul Gardner-Stephen replied: I haven't checked what FPGA the Next uses now, but I believe its a 7-series Xilinx, and so should be capable to run the MEGA65 core, if someone ports it. There are enhanced Spectrum cores on files.mega65.org, but I don't know of a port of the full Next core. But it migh...

My first few weeks with the xberry pi
I think its fair to say I've ended up here via Linux and the Uzebox open source console. I've been primarily a Linux user since '96 and around 2020 I wanted to learn a bit about electronics by building myself a Uzebox. I would highly recommend anyone else wanting to learn electronics who is into ret...

Re: Downloading old builds of NextZXOS
The bug report I linked to in the first post is wrong. It seems that Victors cores do still work with the latest stable NextZXOS release firmware (22.10) but only via VGA, at least the NES core works OK.

There doesn't seem to be a link to https://www.specnext.com/tag/firmware/ on https://www.specnext.com/latestdistro/ but there may no longer be a reason for people to install older firmwar...

Downloading old builds of NextZXOS
I want to try the NES core on my xberry pi but according to this bug report: https://gitlab.com/victor.trucco/zx-spectrum-next-cores/-/issues/5 I need to be running a core that predates 22.09, maybe earlier? Where might I be able to download an old (pre 22.09) build of NextZXOS? I have found these t...

I should've thought to search for him on YT!
Good to know he's still with us. He was definitely pleased with his white Next!

Is Victor Trucco still involved with the ZXN at all?
Does anyone know what he has done since? Did he start work on another retro computer?
I emailed him about a week ago and he's not replied so I hope he's OK. I can't check his X account as I don't use it but he's not posted to FB since 2019.

https://wiki.specnext.dev/M30_8BitDo_wireless_MegaDrive_pad#How_to_test_the_functionality_of_controller Thanks Xela! Yes it seems the nextest.nex tool is fine for testing one joystick at least. It taught me that the x, y and z buttons on joystick 1 are mapped to the x, y and z keys on the keyboard....

Re: Learning C games dev for the ZXN
CSpect still runs fine under Linux using mono. I've tested it recently with Debian. Whilst it may not be as accurate as CSpect, I'm not sure, I like zesarux because its open source and it uses SDL, which most Linux users will already have installed as opposed to mono, which they will probably won't ...

Porting the MEGA65 to the Next
Has anyone looked into the possibility of porting the MEGA65 core to Spectrum Next FPGAs?
Maybe only the KS2+ will be able to handle it?

Re: Learning C games dev for the ZXN
I have no intent of trying to write for Speccy's earlier than the next. I know colour clash etc has its devout fans but I want to use the Next's improved graphics capabilities in my next game, not in this. The graphics in IKD could easily be done on a classic Speccy, I have no doubt, but srill I'm r...
