Re: starting with elias-gamma
So, I use the C register holding the current target bit, so 1, 2, 4, 8, 16, 32, 64, 128. With A holding the current byte that’s going to get added to. Then the sequence goes like this; Jr nc, jump over if the bit is a 0 Bit= 1: Or c Bit=0: Xor c This way, regardless of when the target bit in A is, i...

Re: starting with elias-gamma
You could change the bit according to a register holding the current bit. A method I used in Chess 2k19. The source is in the archive.
If I recall, it sets the bit, then resets it if required by xor-ing the register again. Obviously only possible using A

I paid 50p for it at a zx microfair in about 1984, mostly because I liked the inlay. Can’t actually remember playing it though!!

There’s versions of Alien8, Knightlore, Bubbler, and Martianoids. Then cassette labels and a few other miscellaneous bits.

Re: Could Knight Lore have been (a lot) faster?
The conversion of Melkiors Mansion that Bob Smith is working on is being optimised for speed and seems to have managed to overcome some of the annoyances of the game becoming slow. Though it doesn’t contain the same array of moveable objects that Knight Lore does I guess

Re: ChesSkelet: micro chess program - 363 Bytes
Unfortunately I’d mapped white on white ATTRs over the code so it couldn’t be seen, that could be removed. It was just a proof of concept really, as the code needed to be refactored a lot to fit where there was space around the board. Lots of jr xx instructions added.

Re: ChesSkelet: micro chess program - 363 Bytes
I suppose you could put code in the screen memory as most of the screen is unused, therefore not using any more actual ram :) lol I did exactly that in an experimental version of c2k19. I’ll see if I can find it, though I think it’s probably here on an old thread. It ran from the screen with ATTRs ...

Re: Chesskelet revamped - 269 bytes
The idea in fact was to pair my 3D display engine with something Chesskelet-esque in an attempt to make a 3D chess in under 1k. It’s definitely possible.

Well, on and off. I have a simple gui and move legality checking plus sone other logic implemented. There is currently no method of playing a computer opponent though. Still all under 800 bytes I think.

Re: Going to ZX Spectrum events back in the day
The Microfair was brilliant! I remember going with my dad many times. He even met a guy who worked for Saga systems that he’d worked with back in the 70s. He asked him if he could copy The Last Word that a friend had just bought. Cheeky! The Horticultural Halls was a great venue. I met Christian Urq...
