Re: The best classic Speccy game A-Z POLL OF POLLS
I never played the original Dizzy either and might have voted Treasure Island Dizzy here had it got through. The sense of adventure as a ten year old kid was the equivalent to Tomb Raider a decade later for me. It was that good! The single life was a bummer but I've accepted the Oliver twins' later ...

It's got to be Target Renegade for me too. The great memories of collaborating with a friend BITD are just too strong! (VERY closely followed by Manic Miner which I still play a bit today)

Congratulations on getting it completed after so long!
I can't try it at the moment but I will do later. And I must say, that loading screen looks spectacular, I absolutely love it!

Re: Poking a new character set - help please
Thanks Alessandro, I really do appreciate the detailed reply. I managed to muddle through and it's working. Still not sure how I got there but I'll take it :D I'm embarrassed to admit I was trying to write over the character set direct to the ROM, doh. Thing is, it works in BasinC, not sure why. Tha...

Poking a new character set - help please
Hi all, I'm trying to poke a new character set in BASIC and am having some trouble. I'm doing it in BasinC and all seems well in the included emulator - e.g. when I run the program A-Z are printed as the new characters as expected. However, if I load the .tap into either Fuse or ZXSpin, the characte...

Re: Subroutine placement in BASIC for speed - I'm amazed!
After doing some more testing I'm getting some fluctuating times, I think that my host netbook and the emulator may have a hand in that. Still definitely worth the rewrite though. I was going to joke: then you'll need this thread , but I see you started it! Haha, yes, I'm still a way off that though...

Subroutine placement in BASIC for speed - I'm amazed!
I've often read on various threads about placing subroutine's (primarily input and main loop) close to the start of a large program to improve speed and have always thought "well how much difference can it make really?" Well, I've just got my answer in the real world and I question this no...

Yes, that's the same one. I'll try it from a different device later. Thanks. Aye—both links lead to a zip containing .txt, tape and disk files. Thanks, didn't see the bottom link but it leads to the same place. Don't know what the issue is on my phone but I'll try a laptop later. This looks really ...

This is a great game! Very addictive. I haven't managed to get past level 2 yet but I will persevere. And, in all honesty, I don't think it needs baddies, it's difficult enough already

Did you guys download from here? http://www.worldxxisoft.com/downloads/Redshift.zip I've tried downloading it multiple times and the zip only contains a text file about the game. I followed the download link in the review in the first post. No issues. Yes, that's the same one. I'll try it from a di...

Re: Hisoft Colt Compiler and sprites
Yeah, I was surprised too, Colt gets the Spectrum doing windows as well! Even if Hisoft Colt works out to be a bit slower that Hisoft Basic I think it'll still be fast enough. I've made the decision to carry on developing in BASinC for the time being as testing will be much easier (and quicker!) whi...

Re: Hisoft Colt Compiler and sprites
Thanks for your input guys. I had a good think about the interaction between the character blocks and the ball sprite last night and came to the same conclusion about dividing the ball pixel x,y coords by 8 to get the character position for ATTR checking so thanks for the validation of my thinking C...

Hisoft Colt Compiler and sprites
Having read PeterJ's thread on Hisoft Colt Compiler my interest was piqued by the mention of the sprite implementation. My first game is coming along nicely and I would love to progress from character movement to pixel movement. The problem I have is that I would have two sprites, one of them intera...

BASinC bug - anyone else experienced this?
Hi, I'm using the brilliant BASinC environment to develop my first game and up until now I've been able to put up with this bug. Unfortunately, my code is getting quite large (for me anyway!), circa 20k (still currently with lots of REM statements though) and the bug has caught me out a few times as...

Re: Options for slowing down compiled basic
Yes, use FOR x=1 TO 1000:NEXT x ;) Won't get interrupted by keypress, unlike PAUSE Thanks Ralf, I think I'll use this to get it where I want it for testing at least. Have you considered a bit of in game BEEPer music? That can't be interrupted, and you could tailor it to the speed& mood you want...

Options for slowing down compiled basic
Having completed writing about 80% of an arcade game I've compiled it in Hisoft Basic and now need to slow it down. I can do this with a Pause statement in the main loop and get it to the speed I require but is this good practice when Pause is interruptable? Are there any other better options? My ba...

Re: Converting a .z80 snapshot for compiling?
Thanks serbalgi, I've just tried listbasic. It seems to format the text exactly the same way as using llist from Fuse so still have to delete the extra spaces. It's not a huge issue though with only 204 lines of code so far and if I choose to continue I think I'll do it in ZX-Editor from this point!...

Re: Converting a .z80 snapshot for compiling?
Thanks Einar, I managed to save the .z80 as .bas in BASIN but the file isn't visible except from the BASIN Open dialog. It's icon has a padlock and I can't drag it to Notepad to open it. Thanks anyway. I managed to get the text file from Fuse though and after deleting extra spaces I managed to get Z...

Re: Converting a .z80 snapshot for compiling?
Thanks Joefish, that's another option and sounds easy. I managed to get the plain text file from Fuse and fed it to ZX Basic Compiler. My issue now is I get errors on every line except REM lines, to the point where the compiler gives up after line 15  I shall have to look at the documentation I...

Re: Converting a .z80 snapshot for compiling?
Brilliant, thank you. That sounds like just what I need, I'll give it a try. Marvin only saves to .z80 as far as I can see.

Converting a .z80 snapshot for compiling?
I've started writing a game in Sinclair basic and wanted to compile it to see if the speed increase would make it worth finishing. I was planning on trying Boriel's ZX Basic compiler. Unfortunately, I wrote it in the Marvin emulator and I've only got a .z80 snapshot to work with. I don't fancy manua...
