Re: Devfinitive Edition (Steve Crow): vote

1. Starquake 2. Firelord 3. Wizard's Lair Starquake is just one of those classic 48K games from back in the day. Fast and incredibly smooth gameplay, colourful graphics and amazing sound. I played Wizard's Lair more than Firelord, but the latter gets a higher vote because of the more novel gameplay ...

Re: Snapshots in Fuse MacOS

What format do you save the snapshots in? Some snapshot types also save particular hardware config settings. Out of the supported formats by Fuse (sna, z80, szx) the latter is the newest format, and I would expect that to work best. Otherwise try snapshots in z80 format. Rollback is not supported in...

Re: Poke to hide "Program:, Bytes:" tape loading prompts

If my memory serves correctly I used different values:

POKE 23739,82: POKE 23740,0

This ensured that the effect was gone after a CLS or RUN command.

Re: BASIC Programming workflow on MAC

Are there any other text editors (preferably open source/free ones) that support BASIC syntax highlighting? I don’t know if Sublime Text is still available as a trial version, but I used that version for a long time. (Before I bought a proper license because now I’m using it on a daily basis.) The ...

Re: R-type question

R-Type is one of my all-time favourite schmups, and I’ve played many happy hours on the Spectrum version back in the day. I remember there was a demo version that came with C+VG (I think) that contained the first level only. It was great for practice before I got the full game. Just like others comm...

Re: Best game music/sound

I always liked the music in Stephen Crow’s games, with their sustained notes and “flanger”-like effect.

Not to forget that the in-game effects are some of the very best too. Those teleporters and gates in Starquake. Or the clink-clink sound in Firelord.

Absolutely love Quazatron. Completed it many times. Even though it's based on the principles of Paradroid the isometric platforming makes it unique again.
I had high hopes for its sequel -- Magnetron -- but was utterly let down by it.

Re: Thrust 2 loading

That's the infamous Firebird BleepLoad loading scheme there. It was used in many of Telecomsoft’s titles BITD. My copies of Starglider 128K, Magnetron, and Brainstorm used it. One of the most annoying loading schemes in my opinion. It made an already lengthy loading process even longer because of al...

Happy to hear. Hope you all in the UK get them very soon!

Got mine last week in The Netherlands. In comparison to the KS1 version it’s really nicely boxed and protected by the cardboard packaging.

Re: Which year did you get your first Spectrum?

The Netherlands, summer of 1985: an original rubber keyed Spectrum 48K. Bought new (by my elder brother) at a V&D department store together with a copy of Fighter Pilot and Falcon Patrol II. The two of us spent half an hour on his tiny Peugeot 103 SP moped to get to the shop, and then the same a...
