Re: RIP F David Thorpe
RIP Frederick David Thorpe. Screens like Blue Max shows he could wrestle with attributes and win, Cavelon shows artistic inspiration and skills of composition, and Chinese Juggler and Eskimo Eddie are simply fantastic screens and not just 'for the speccy'. Not to mention his landscape art. He was pr...

Re: New Game: Nectar
There is now a learners mode, selected from the main menu, which starts with an easier level and you don't lose collected nectar between lives. Great idea. There's a bug though - if you complete a level in learner mode it gets stuck in a loop. It looks like it tried to start a new level, but automa...

Re: Bunkered! By Global Software 1985 - can't any reference online
After chatting with bartfast and others, it seems unlikely that a golf game called "Bunkered" was recorded over on both sides with a BASIC golf game from 3 years earlier, and more likely that Global Software are the re-releaser of Abrasco's Golf. I still find it weird that Global haven't m...

Re: Something I noticed about Renegade 3
Had it have been a budget game with nothing to do with the series, called "Time Punk" then we'd probably be more forgiving. Yep great points. It could even have gone as far as 'hidden gem' with quirky speccy humour. So having said that, I'm wondering if I should up my vote from a 6 to 7...

Yep! Android 1. Just been playing (wrestling with?) it and wondered what the reviews made of it. For some reason I found it harder than an isometric.

Re: Guess the game from the review (Spectrum 2.0)
It's a relatively simple affair where everything moves in exact character squares, complicated by a rotate and move control system.

Re: Game of the day...
I'm reassured by it only having ten levels, perhaps I'm less rubbish than I thought. (Got as far as The Pits) First attempt, level one was a nightmare for me. I needed to get used to the strict collision and most importantly not be so bloody eager. There's a trick with The Pits: it's easy with it, ...

Re: Bunkered! By Global Software 1985 - can't any reference online
Massive thanks to bartfast * for sending me the tape for this. With the help of people in this thread , I managed to convert it to TAP. I'm not uploading anything to the site yet as there some questions over what's what here. Here's the TAP . But it's exactly the same as Abrasco's Golf , already in ...

Re: Beginner's guide to tape preservation
Thanks fellas. I haven't even got past the first hurdle yet! https://stonechatproductions.co.uk/zxgames/gameimages/AudacityProb.png I'm playing the tape, but no trace is being recorded, despite the green bar at the top moving in sync with loading noises (and responding to changes in volume). The Ste...

Re: Data prior to the default UDG bank
That all depends on how tidy your code is, and if you RETurn from every CALL!!! You can get away with a lot of mess in a game with, for example, a jump JP directly to your 'You Died' or finally 'Game Over' function, and have that reset the stack pointer, then jump again directly to your title...

Re: Data prior to the default UDG bank
How do you set SP from machine code? ld sp,44000 Yep just like that Sludge. As long as you're not planning to return to BASIC, you can LOAD SP anywhere your own code will not encroach, and the stack will build down from there. Maybe allow 100 bytes space to be extra careful. It's best done once at ...

1 - Cricket Challenge 2 - The Racing Game The field sport games are the same formula. The racing game arguably has more going for it in terms of presentation and play, but I went for the one that interested me more. Nay third place. Beginner's guide to tape preservation
Can anyone give any pointers on how to convert cassette tapes to TAP/TZX. I thought it would be straightforward, but nothing has worked so far. I'm after the basics: -how do I get the sound onto a laptop? I have a tape player, a mono-stereo jack, and Audacity to record. Do laptops automatically reco...

Re: Kempston support
This is what I use on the title screen to load Kempston values into the game code: It might be less confusing to have 3 separate routines rather than all that code poking. So e.g. on the intro page you have a byte that says what control option has been selected, the game code could look something l...

The program uses memory location 23300, which needs to be zero so the program can find the graphics correctly. This l...
