Re: Specchum's read a book, pass it on.

Yeah decided to hijack the thread. So: 1. What book sounded really good, but was sh*t when you read it? 2. What shitty book you never wanted to read turned out to be excellent? Mine are: 1. Someone (genuinely intelligent) tried to make me read Harry Potter, and I thought, well Elizabeth liked it, an...

Re: Specchum's read a book, pass it on.

BTW I picked up some godawful sci-fi 70s book a while ago and it was about an amazing time-travelling man and a girl he maybe fucked, can't remember, her name was "Cinnamon". and she was black. ouch. It sounded so good from the blurb on the back though. I am tempted to hijack this thread into "what ...

Re: Specchum's read a book, pass it on.

I will swap it for the Usborne Guide to Making BASIC Games About Pirates Stealing Gold on the Dragon 32.*

* For Spectrum and C64, replace line 49 with the following: 49 LET GOLD=0

Re: Rambling about PLAY

Well, speech add-ons for the Speccy were a toy, because having voice coming out of your computer was very strange and interesting in the 80s. I also had a BBC Micro with the Superior Software "!SPEECH" ROM and it sounded like a crazy robot but it was definitely recognisable speech (and actually a lo...

Re: The best classic Speccy game beginning with #: re-run vote

I'm sad that there is literally nowhere on the Internet, even a place that is dedicated to a 1980s British computer, that doesn't devolve into American politics and Trump shittery. But well done Pete, you posted a lolzworthy meme! HAW ! HAW ! ORANGE MAN ! Good one.

Re: Rambling about PLAY

Thanks for your reply dj. I think it would be very interesting to hook up a Speccy to a MIDI instrument and see how well it actually works. I don't know why they bothered trying to make the Spectrum send MIDI instructions but I would assume it's because they felt they had to compete with the Atari. ...

I know you're lying because the Spectrum can't do orange.

Re: The best classic Speccy game beginning with #: re-run vote

Missing from the poll is "1999" (by the same kids who wrote "Astroball"), a savagely unfair space scroll-and-shooter. Did anyone play this? There's a section where you have to dodge up and down to avoid an incredibly fast sequence of oncoming walls. A bit like "Flappy Bird" if the bird were launched...

Rambling about PLAY

As a kid with a Spectrum +2, I used to mess about a lot with the PLAY command, trying to produce various sound effects. Stuff like a doorbell, a chain of explosions, and (a bit trickier) helicopter rotors. I had the vague feeling that a complex enough PLAY statement should be able to synthesise spee...

Re: Can't hear speech in "Ruairi Says Rectum"

Thanks, Alessandro: that WAV file was what I needed. I don't know why UnrealSpeccy was glitchy for me, but possibly because my computer is slightly old (about a decade -- though still very capable of emulating a Spectrum, one would imagine) or because having a separate app recording the speaker outp...
