Drug warning

It's 1984, and we keep hearing about these fashionable "drugs". Do you have kids, or a spouse, or do you live in bloody Wales? Why not read the following important information? https://hwb.gov.wales/keeping-safe-online/in-the-know Also, here are some of the words that drug dealers might us...

Re: Did I mention the search is bad?

What if we spelled out words by hitting a single key on the keyboard, combined with Shift or Extend modifiers... sounds crazy but I think it could work! (This was a joke about 16/48K BASIC keyboard entry by the way. Mod PeterJ correctly deleted and PMed me when I later went crazy. But you can still...

Re: More Spectrum references in popular music

So we have this, compiled by @equinox and hosted on WoS: ... An aside: Lee, I ditched the idea of "having a home page" in 2014, but I didn't want to lose all the useful stuff I had accumulated. That included (as far as the Speccy scene cares) 1. my list of Easter eggs in games, 2. my list...

Re: ZXDB Update - May 04, 2024

Well done on those RZX for Tiny Nightmares @pavero and Whirlwind @equinox. Rollback or no rollback, they are not trivial to complete! Next (game list) update I will post the RZX for "Rockfall 3", a game that nobody else will ever complete (except possibly Andre Leao, and future interested...

Bloody hell I've fallen for an Eq tangent! You were talking about Rise out of the Dungeons on MSX. I actually woke in the night and thought "Hang on - the odds of a Blaby release on the MSX are rather small" ! I dream about you too honey. Regarding the Whirlwind game: as I recall, it only...

Re: Subliminal Extacy #6

The music is extremely high quality, wow! Texts are OK... I loved Dave Fountain's story, although if it's sad at the end, it's because we ain't doing the right thing. We were big swappers in the early 90s and I picked up a lot of his style and attitude (including the swearing). I think he told a cou...

Re: UniDOS on the +D (Plus D) disk system

Very informative -- thank you!

And Dr Andy Wright was definitely for me the name that I knew when I heard it -- yes -- everyone knew Beta BASIC was excellent but it's tough to introduce a new standard. (I truly think Sam BASIC is the best consumer BASIC ever made. It's stunning.)

Re: A crap version of...

All right, here's a more philosophical one: Knight Lore, Alien-8, Pentagram They are all the same producer of course (Ultimate) but I think any Speccy game player would separate them into 1 and 2. For me: Knight Lore is the "good" one: Pentagram is playable, Alien 8 is playable, but they a...

1) Dizzy 3.5 - Because it's Dizzy! A whole new (small) adventure. A new character who is never mentioned again. A somersaulting egg. What more could you want? A weird blobby amoeba thing with huge hands. 2) Seymour Take One - Because it's almost Dizzy. The loveable spud(?) in his own mini adventure...

Re: UniDOS on the +D (Plus D) disk system

It's a perfectly reasonable approach for software produced by enthusiastic amateurs as a hobby. The author would get a little bit of income if it was popular and sold and Nev would be taking on most of the risk and hassle of selling it. It's a perfectly reasonable approach given a minimum figure of...

Re: UniDOS on the +D (Plus D) disk system

Nev Young mentions UNIDOS in his entry at World of SAM side comment, not about disks or DOS: Perhaps I am cynical but did Brenchley suggest "you should do a royalty-based independent-coder software house" (= the house takes care of the coder for the gradual development, and pays them repe...

Re: UniDOS on the +D (Plus D) disk system

Reading through all Format issues could provide more insight. SD Software was advertising in pretty much every issue. Oh I had totally forgotten about Format... I remember it existing as a paid subscription, and I remember Mr Bob Brenchley (didn't they end up being more of a Sam Coupé affair?), but...

Re: The best 'Special Edition' promo on a YS/Crash/SU covertape: vote

I see, this is the "what do we call non-demo products on a tape" -- I am glad that my "promo" suggestion was used. I voted for Diz 3.5 because that was an entire (mini)game to the extent that it actually introduced a new character to the franchise (Dizzy's brother/cousin/whatever...

Did I mention the search is bad?

No I'm not going to complain that it wouldn't let me do two searches in 30 seconds. I'm going to raise this: "The following words in your search query were ignored because they are too common words: QL. You must specify at least one word to search for. Each word must consist of at least 3 chara...

UniDOS on the +D (Plus D) disk system

I don't know how many people had an MGT +D (Plus D) floppy disk system. This plugged into yer backside and gave you proper high-speed mass storage, on 3.5" floppies, not the dodgy "mass-storage" lie of the microdrive. However of course it came somewhat later, and had no official appro...

I think the duffel was military.

I don't have any evidence but personally would assume a real staffer who was just assigned tips as her remit.

There were plenty of women working on magazines, but but women with any interest in home computing prior to the WWW — particularly technical interest — seem to have been extremely rare.
