Re: NEXT Update
You don't have to remind me, that the SpecNext propaganda machine is very strong. As an individual, if you try to go up against it, you'll be crushed. Since you know the project, ask Victor if he took Miguel's code from ZX Uno and used it in ZX Next ? Woe is you. Clearly you must be a martyr. Prete...

Re: NEXT Update
The comments on the last update are definitely the height of idolatry. Every new delay is followed by messages of endless adoration of the "great leader(s)". Orwell would be truly proud... Most people are understanding when there is reasonable cause for delay. Communicating what is going ...

Re: Playing Robotics on ZX UNO+
I finally got around to putting the kempston decoding on port df into the mainline spectrum next core and I was a little surprised with what I found. The original problem raised in this thread was that some Spanish games were using port DF instead of 1F to read the kempston joystick. On interfaces t...

Updating is quite straightforward. It might help to understand a little about how the machine works to gain some confidence:

Re: n-go not running "Old Tower" game as it should
So now i have to run in VGA now Im sad now.... Version 4 of the core will have correct hdmi video timing but that won't be coming for a while. Spectrum clones don't attempt hdmi for a reason -- modern tv standards are incompatible with spectrum video signals. The Spectrum Next is a spectrum interna...

Re: Loading via tape
Once you've got a proper tape cable (+3) and you take care of the possibility that your tape deck puts out stereo audio instead of mono as they should (the new ones do this), it is down to tape volume. The ear circuit in the Next is less sensitive than most of the original machines which means you n...

Re: how far can the graphics go.
nope, as the notorious TS-conf was made for much, much older and weaker FPGA and is more powerful as gaming platform in most respects Definitely not. For the main question, you need to stop thinking like an emulator author and understand how hardware works. The maximum resolution display by the Spe...

Re: New discovery on Z80 interrupts
IFF2 is copied to IFF1 during M1T2 of next instruction after RETI/RETN, therefore a maskable interrupt cannot occur immediately after a non-maskable interrupt that ends with RETN This is very unlikely from a hardware standpoint. This would require extra circuitry to carry forward a signal into the ...

Re: New discovery on Z80 interrupts
The NMI line is not sampled during the NMI response. Therefore it is not possible to produce two chained NMI responses. The CPU ignores NMI requests during the NMI response. That is, it is not possible to produce one NMI response (11 T-states) and then, immediately after, another one. The nmi is no...

Re: how far can the graphics go.
I can't find any other programming language that is fast and works well on it (this Nextbasic is very slow). if you want to do a little more then the only option left is nexzbuild or asm. You can also program in c using z88dk. Many of the dot commands and some software like nextdaw, magnetic scroll...

Re: how far can the graphics go.
The Spectrum Next itself has limitations that are imposed by the fpga capacity and a decision to root the design in a "what could have been possible in the 1990ish time frame idea" by logically extending the spectrum architecture. Most of the fpga is actually taken up with circuitry for ba...

Some information about updates and distributions: https://www.specnext.com/forum/viewtopic.php?p=13646#p13644 If you have two separate sd cards with their own distributions then it's a simple matter to go back and forth. The one thing you need to do is to remember to update the hardware by pressing ...

A program that lets you draw sprites, tiles, etc on the zx next itself: https://leeorg.itch.io/krystle-designs There are many pc tools on github and gitlab written for the pc that do image conversions to the Next. The text above your screenshot in that documentation is relevant so I will quote it here: Tiling commands For layer 2 and lo-res modes, there are new commands available to draw complete screens (or sections of a screen) from a set of tiles and a tilemap. Tiles are either 8x8 pixels in size or 16x16 ...

Re: Yellow button on N-G0
The (supposed to be) yellow button closest to you is the multiface nmi button. The (supposed to be) green button in the middle is the divmmc nmi button. The red button furthest away is the reset button. Hold that for a short time for a soft reset (like power cycle of spectrum) or a long time for a h...

Re: Interrupt with NextBasic ?
I can already move sprites and copper with reg commands. I would also like to have an independent movement in the repeat loop for an instruction with an interrupt. I don't know exactly what you mean but there is no way to execute basic commands on interrupt. Basic runs as fast as it can and the bes...

Re: RAMS update? Firmware update?
All makes sense, I thought as much. Good to hear, I hope they keep developing RAMS, as I say I like it, prefer it to MAME, it's simple to use. It is MAME inspired, that's for sure and technically it's the exact same idea where original code is running and there is adaptation code that maps graphica...

It may be helpful to read the "New Commands and Features" documentation here: https://gitlab.com/thesmog358/tbblue/-/tree/master/docs/nextzxos Sprite commands start on page 7 and there's something about automatic sprite movement on page 9. This document applies to the very latest NextZXOS ...

Re: Pattern autoincrementing - or not?
Can't help with your query, but amen to that sentiment! I've been diligently holding off doing any Next development until I have one, but I don't want to wait another year. There is a lot to the Next. I highly recommend becoming familiar now -- the emulators are partial but they do implement most c...

Re: Pattern autoincrementing - or not?
Pattern 0 is fine, Pattern 1 is a corrupt mess. This is the code: ld bc,$303b ; this sprite control port again xor a ; first sprite out (c),a ; select it ld hl, tiles ; 16 tile graphics stored here ld c,$5b ; copying sprite data goes via this port apparently ld b,0 ; 2 sprites worth otir If I split...

Re: Next not coming until June 2023
But it is their own fault. Instead of making the second Kickstarter a quick turnaround of the original Next hardware, which was what was originally promised, they started to tinker with it and make “improvements”, adding in things like 2MB of memory as a stretch goal. Well no -- it is clearly state...
