Re: DenOfGeek : The games that defined the Spectrum
Yes, it was a fairly obscure and underrated game around the time of its release, no doubt about that, but it achieved cult status from that first appearance on YS's covertape. That's what we call a sleeper hit. The idea that Your Sinclair single-handedly plucked the previously maligned Chaos out of...

They're all the wrong way round, eg Spectrum Games was renamed to Ocean, Richard Wilcox Software was renamed to Elite, Tehkan was renamed to Tecmo etc. apart from: A'n'F and MC Lothlorien owned Icon Design, they didn't become them. These are still the wrong way round, or the labels "renamed fr...

Graham Gooch is a conversion of the C64 original and is from 1985, not 1986 as is currently listed, although there is also an updated 1986 version with a sticker saying "new 1986 version" on the front. Argus didn't start using the Bug-Byte label until late 85, but based on the cover style ...

Hi @StooB About your fixes on the SQIJ! I was thinking that on top of removing the inaccurate comment, we can give more context based on the interview on Eurogamer. I was thinking on adding two extra comments: "Jason Creighton recalls CRL reporting having sold about 250 copies." and "...

Re: Devfinitive Edition (David Jones): discussion
I’m not sure why the DB has a separate listing for Spellbound and not the others. The logic behind it is that Spellbound was originally designed as a 48k game and published before the Spectrum 128 was released. It's zxdb entry has a machine type of "ZX Spectrum 48K". Knight Tyme and Storm...

Software Supersavers Ltd
All the magazine references from 1987/8 should be moved to a new entry for "Software Supersavers" of type "Company: Software sales". This company is not "Software Supersavers Ltd", the budget label from Software Projects.

So maybe the DB needs to be updated to reflect this? Looks like the Encore release was deleted when the original release was changed to be the Hit Pak compilation a couple of years ago. I've added it back on the preservation tools with the release date and price from the advert above. ( druellan ) ...

I think K-Tel was an imprint of the Prism Leisure Corporation, or even an alias. Anyway, there's some kind of connection there. Prism own Front Runner, the original publisher of ZX Spectrum Boulder Dash. Also, Prism was one of a few companies that rereleased it. It's convoluted, I know... No, Prism...

Re: Spaghetti football?!?
Yeah I'm personally convinced of this now. Italia 90 was a registered trademark (you can see the ® sign on the game packaging) and there might have been reasons why they couldn't use it before formally acquiring the licence. And of course spaghetti is Italian, and "spaghetti football" isn...

This sounds like a hoax. I found one site which references Popular Computing Weekly magazine on this date, but it's missing. Also, several other sources state the final issue was 415, the week before (my guess is the owner of this site just carried on adding the data for each issue without knowing ...

weren't the realities the same for Commando (or, if you want any-direction scrolling, for Critical Mass ) in the same 1985? No. Commando and Critical Mass were released in November 1985 and were, with the exception of Nigel Alderton's work on Street Hawk, the developers only releases of the ...

Re: Zaxxon, should have been better for 1985
While Zaxxon was 1985, it was only just 1985, released in early January. To put it into context, Ghostbusters was at number one, and Ultimate were in-between Knight Lore and Alien 8. Vortex had released Cyclone around 6 weeks earlier and Highway Encounter didn't come out until July 1985, around the ...

Also, while Frightmare and Fallen Angel did appear under the Summit brand, they are also part of 4Most Fight & Fright, so count as Alternative re-releases. Well, if you're adding re-releases from Summit/React/Winner on the 4 Most compilations then you do need: The Double from 4 Most Balls, Boot...

There were other brands owned by Alternative Software, such as Summit, Winner and React, who also reissued games from Alternative Software's acquisition of other company's software archives. I'll be covering those later on this month. Let me know if there's a mistake with anything in the above. Tha...

Re: But really, why didn't the Speccy have a definitive football game?
I'll need to check this out. I don't think it made much impact when originally released. Emlyn Hughes International Soccer is by a long way the most successful non-management football game on the Spectrum, and on the C64 too. It was denied the number one position by RoboCop for a few months in earl...
