New old routine...

Found a cassette with my handwriting on... with a routine I'd apparently written in 1987 (and, I written a BASIC front end for it in 1988). So I'd have been 15 and 16. ...AND the tape still loaded! https://i.postimg.cc/fVD72S5Q/Whats-App-Image-2023-08-24-at-12-15-02-PM.jpg It was a tiny little machi...

Re: Should game reviews mark down games for being unoriginal?

I don't think this question is limited to computer games. Sequels (books, films, video games, board games) are often compared unfavourably and 'marked down' if they are too similar to the progenitor. Yet they may tangibly improve upon the original in small ways ... Objectively being 'better' but lac...

I've stupidly just submitted a game that I'm actually enjoying playing.
It's a worrying trend in my 2023 entries!

It's not an utterly terrible version, it's USP being the wrap-round screen, and the need to eat constantly.

Re: C.S.C.G.C 2023 is open for entries

That double-stacked USR would have been perfect for my Magenta Challenge a couple of years ago. Have you tried this trick before, or is this completely new? I don't think I've used it before. It really just came to me as I was thinking of how USR is treated differently depending on whether it's bei...

TMD2003 This is rather niche, but anyone is 'into' alternate tempered tunings Wendy Carlos's album Beauty In The Beast is amazing. It took me many listens to acclimatise myself to it, so the barrier to entry is quite high, but it's a fascinating exploration of this area. Regarding the failing of 12...

Great stuff on the radio interview @Jbizzel! Managing to put the interviewer straight on his rather off-target assumptions throughout.

And obviously you'll need to quit your day job to review full time after all the press engagements.

Re: C.S.C.G.C 2023 is open for entries

In what is a potentially dangerous move, I've been making games to submit into CSSCGC2023 that are (whisper it) quite enjoyable to play . I'm sure that going against the spirit of the competition! I'll not spoil anything before Jamie gets chance to lay into it, but the reason my most recent entry to...

Isn't the 'black box' problem getting ever worse with *noone* really understanding computers, and computers designing their own successors...

I've managed to get my head around Python's PIP package manager enough to install TZXTOOLS (github here ) and used them to create tzxs from the wavs I ripped from the DVD. Wooh, go me! The three files are here . Two are basically screenshots - albeit with some REM statements in the loader, the last ...

Green Beret and Ghosts 'n' Goblins. Obviously. And anyone that took more than one go is a loser.

(Actually I did all the stages in Beach Head, but not on my first go)

Re: Hey hey 16k DVD on sale for £2

Well I watched it. I obviously enjoyed the three clips of spectrum programs loading (including a not-very-hidden one of the GoFasterStripe logo as a speccy screen$) on the menu. Given the effort involved (in ripping the audio from the DVD, then getting an emulator that loads WAV files) I'm glad that...

Whilst not exactly what you're describing I always found A Whole New Ball Game and Brainstorm (both by Pete Cooke) very much evoked that flavour. (Lemmings too). The Incredible Machine (pc) doesn't seem outside the realms of possiblity on the spectrum. I'd like to see that. Incidentally I wonder if ...

Re: Homebrew developers: a couple of questions, this goes hypothetical

I'd definitely want 3D ATTR Maze published by one of the early companies. The ones that looked like they had hand drawn, photocopied inlays, and liberally used '3D' as a selling point. Or maybe Blaby Computer Games , as they were from a town very near where I lived, and have an equally homegrown fee...

My QWERT fingering was this:

Rubber keyed spectrum at about 45 degrees, 'caps shift' closest to me.

Index/middle (right hand) Q/W
Index/middle/ring (left hand) E/R/T

All other approaches are wrong.

Re: 42 Column Routine (BASIC extension)

Here's a quick variant on this, as I had a polite email requesting it. tap file It uses LPRINT (technically stream #3) in place of PRINT #7; to access the routine. So, as long as you've not got a printer attached, this might be the better version to use. Your BASIC will look something like this: 5 R...

You're playing against an "evil computer" in Byte. Which is, thematically, close to Rogue AI, amiright?

It is also the first spectrum game I bought, because I couldn't afford JetPac.

Mum went back and got JetPac. Thanks mum.
