Chortle. Any idea what he's playing btw? Or.. or.. just a thought.. that phone can't receive texts.. I'd say that's on her! I knew somebody would beat me to pointing out the obvious flaw with this picture. Also he's about 12 and she's about 25, so any interaction of that nature would be highl...

Re: The best Speccy game by Mastertronic: vote

Chronos is one of the best shoot-em-ups ever made for the Spectrum. I must admit that this completely passed me by at the time (a lot of these did to be honest), which is a real shame; I've had a quick glance at the walkthrough and it looks like it would have been right up my street. Interestingly ...

Kind of surprised that Loco-Motion doesn't have more love on here. For me, it's the absolute standout and still plays well today.

1. Loco-Motion
2. Finders Keepers
3. Kikstart 2

Re: The best Speccy game by Mastertronic Added Dimension: vote

It's a pretty good line-up, really. Some of these polls, I struggle to make a top 3 but I could probably do...oh, at least a credible top 5 from these. 180 at the top of course; it's a bit easy, but is such a great game to play even now that it has to be in first place. 1. 180 2. Spellbound 3. Knigh...

Re: Old BASIC games that deserve a Machine Code remake

A compiler is the middle way, I compiled a few basic games back in the day with M Coder (the first version), the biggest effort was compiling Kevin Tom's Football Manager. Of course it won't add any polish or class to the game, it just means you don't have such long waits for the next screen to app...

Re: Famous beeper sounds

The sound from Dynamite Dan when you lose a life is excellent, it always stands out for me because before I heard that, I didn't know that the Spectrum could be coerced into making that kind of noise. But all the sound in both Dynamite Dan games is great. It's no real surprise that Rod Bowkett was a...

Re: Changing Fonts in ZX Spectrum :)

1. Not really, not unless you 'write' directly to the new font location to 'build' it live. A bit like that character thickener routine that's been used in a few bits of Basic. Not unless you change it in the ROM that is. :D I’ve been searching for a character thickening routine, but this is the on...

Re: The best Speccy game by Melbourne House: vote

Very difficult, lots of nice games here and - possibly more pertinently - lots of games that I played a lot back in the 1980s, which always colours my votes on these things. I'm going to go for: 1. Starion 2. Way Of The Exploding Fist 3. Hampstead Could easily have had Gyroscope, Sherlock, Penetrato...

I've gone for Full Throttle, I thought it was a really good racing simulation for its time. And Deathchase doesn't really need any more votes.

2. Jasper!
3. Deathchase

Re: Did you ever think you were the last Spectrum user?

Excellent topic. In my last year at university in Dundee (1992-93) I took my Spectrum with me and it was permanently connected to the massive CRT TV (which weighed roughly one metric tonne) that I'd bought for £40 from a dodgy second-hand shop. This was purely so that I could run my revolutionary fo...

Re: The best Speccy game by Encore: vote re-run (sorry)

I finally played Mike Read's Pop Quiz today. I'm a total pop nerd, so I'm not sure why I've not sought it out before (probably because of the Mike Read connection). I didn't mind the obscure 1950s/1960s questions, as these are fair (and some should always be included in a well-rounded pop quiz) plus...

Re: The best Speccy game by Melbourne House: discussion

I must admit that I didn't realise that a lot of these were Melbourne House releases. It's not a bad roster, all told. Of the adventures, I much preferred Hampstead and Sherlock to The Hobbit/Lord Of The Rings, but that's really just down to my preference for the settings/subject matter. When Sherlo...

Re: Keyboard Controls

I know that QAOP and M/SPACE is the classic key layout for Speccy games, but I've seen some people prefer a sort of 'left-handed' version of this with ZX for left/right and up/down on the right. If there was another option for keys in a game (and not redefinable), what would it be? If I could redef...

Re: The best Speccy game by Encore: vote

I don't even know who that Mike Read is! He's, um... like a real-life Alan Partridge. A TV/radio presenter from the 1980s who had very little charisma. He was on things, but I could never suss out why. Must be a case of knowing the right people, because he's certainly inept and has no social ...

Re: The best Speccy game by Elite: vote

As I mentioned in the discussion thread, this is between two absolute classics for me. It's almost a coin toss because they're both so good. But I think Bomb Jack just about edges it. 3rd place to Kokotoni Wilf; although not really close to the standard of the first two, still a good, fun game. 1. B...

Re: The best Speccy game by Elite: discussion

I'd actually forgotten how many good games Elite put out. For some reason my lasting impression of them has been of a downmarket US Gold, all rushed-out licences of poor-quality US TV shows, but looking at the list, there are some great games there and at least a couple of absolute classics (as othe...

As the author of BASin has said it might have a few bugs and it will be fixed but not yet (and he is hinting it will be merged into a shiny new Spin :) ) so if you are having an issue with saving then save as a .bas and before you exit basin just copy the text into notepad and save that. if the .ba...

Something like that happened to me after renaming, Basinc erased the content not only in ram but also on the saved file.
Nope, it was called "d".bas. Maybe too short names also mess it up!

OK, here's an odd one. I've been messing with something for the last couple of days and saving it as a .bas file. Everything was fine, the file was saved and re-opened probably ten times or more with no problems, until today. Attempting to open it does nothing, there is apparently no program. It's n...

Ok, no problem. I want to finish the season as top scorer! I'm still considering how it's all going to work. From the Wally Week saga I'm missing Hinsley & Strudwick. We can also include artists like Thorpe, Wakelin, Azpiri, Delcan & Royo (another three foreign! ;) ), Frey, Rowe and Lund. Excellent! Think I've got 95 now, so probably enough to get going (although I've not worked out exactly how ev...

I honestly barely remember more than a handful of these. The only one that I spent any kind of time on was Mindshadow, so that gets my vote. Adventure games could often be quite impenetrable in those days (especially as in most cases I only had tape-to-tape copies with no instructions) but Mindshado...
