I heard that one too!

Plus that flaming trailer in Lunar Jetman. I must have spent hours looking for that!

Re: Poll: Manic Miner vs Jet Set Willy

Would anyone say MM 'saved' the spectrum? I think, if anything, time saved the Spectrum. As time progressed, programmers found out more ways to coax performance and graphics out of the Spectrum - and games improved as a result. If the Spectrum had been replaced with a new model sooner, then the qua...

I think 3 is the Banyan Tree and 10 is the Security Guard.

I'm not totally sure though!

Re: Poll: Manic Miner vs Jet Set Willy

Heh brilliant. I'm trying imagine any of my Aunt's managing to make willy jump let alone finish. Amazingly, she went out and bought a Spectrum straight after that Christmas! As for Eugene's Lair - I never had too much problem with it, once I got the timing right on the second platform, and the long...

Re: Poll: Manic Miner vs Jet Set Willy

It's a tricky one! I have very fond memories of both. MM was the first game I got back in Christmas 1983 and the whole family tried it out. Amazing though it seems these days - nobody was able to get beyond the Central Cavern until IIRC my Aunt managed it after playing for hours once I had gone to b...

Re: Classic Vs Homebrew

To be honest, I am not much of a game player these days. I find the hardware side of things more interesting. Having said that, I do occasionally play the classics.

I keep thinking I need to check out of the homebrew stuff, but as yet, I haven't really got around to it.

You're right Juan,

Games like Manic Miner, JSW and Jetpac stood head and shoulders above the competition of the time.

Re: Forum Ranks

Agreed - Elite was very popular in the BBC world. After my Spectrum, I graduated to a BBC Master and didn't play all that many games because by that point I had started to program. I did have Elite though, and I particularly enjoyed the Master disk version because it had more ships - Particularly th...

Re: The 'familiars'

Manic Miner was the first game I got with my Spectrum. I still remember the anticipation I felt when Jetset Willy was coming out. Saturday morning was shopping day, so the next Saturday morning I headed down to WHSmith, bought my copy and played it to death. There are definitely better games, and ga...

Re: +3 was too expensive?

I'm not sure if the +3 was too expensive, but there were probably better options for the sort of people who would be likely to need a disk drive. I think it is probably fair to say that the +2 was more successful than the +3. The +2 stuck to the tried and tested formula of games on cassette as many ...

Re: World of Spectrum....

Yes, there are obviously a lot of (understandable) frustrations with what's been happening at WoS. It would be great if we can avoid them boiling over here. I'm really grateful Peter et al have set up this place and have given us an alternative place to discuss Spectrum matters. I think it would be...

I do remember reading at one time that Matthew Smith could have afforded to buy a Porsche at 14 (or some such similar statement).

As a child, I was pretty awestruck by that - but despite a career in IT, I have yet to own a Porsche

Re: World of Spectrum....

I think everyone needs to be very careful here. Much mud slinging has taken place over an extended period of time - and in my humble opinion it is now time to stop. I see this whole situation as follows: The original World of Spectrum as developed by Martijn was a tremendous achievement - I was task...

TVS co-produced Fraggle Rock.

To be honest, I'm surprised there was never a game based on the series.

Re: Feud by Bulldog (Mastertronic)

It's a good one - and I have a story about how I came to buy it. When it came out, I thought it looked good, and wanted to play it but for whatever reason couldn't buy it. So, against my better judgement borrowed it from a lad at school who I didn't get on particularly well with. Having got home tha...

I actually think it is a tremendous shame - I know none of the people involved with WOS personally, nor do I understand the ins and outs of what has been happening over there but I have been visiting on and off for years. It is one of those websites that has (for me) almost always been around (right...

I was more of a Crash fan to be honest, although I would quite often buy YS as well.

I never really liked Sinclair User and by the time the market started to wane, I had moved onto a BBC Master

I always enjoyed "Rescue". It is only text, but it was quite addictive and was quite exciting when trying to evade the patrols.
