Re: How much of a 48k game is graphics? How much is code?

Thanks for the responses chaps, it's fascinating! I have another question… I'm being told here by some that programmers don't want limits on their code size - the more space the better, ideally. Now that's something I personally agree with. I don't see anything "fun" about finding I've hit...

Re: How much of a 48k game is graphics? How much is code?

Paradigm, you're arguing that different game genres will create distinct peaks of their own, just as the height of men and women create two peaks on a single chart. In order for such distinct peaks to emerge, you'd need to have a small number of highly distinct game genres - a clustering together of...

Re: How much of a 48k game is graphics? How much is code?

I did A-Level statistics. the "curve" could look like a mountain range. All small sets of data look like mountain ranges. However, we are talking here about a theoretically unlimited sample size, with a real data set of thousands of games. The bigger the sample size, the closer the chart w...

Re: How much of a 48k game is graphics? How much is code?

I totally appreciate that the size of code varies a lot, and this fact is useful to know. But, statistically, there has to be some kind of "mean" average at the top of a bell curve. Whether the curve looks something like this: https://i.postimg.cc/TPCrTTTX/mean.png Or is flatter like this:...

Sorry, after Van_Dammesque got it, I assumed everyone would.

Zooming out JUST ONE MORE PIXEL may give the game away completely…

Re: How much of a 48k game is graphics? How much is code?

MustardTiger, that is absolutely brilliant, thank you!

As for my project, I'm sorry to be cagey at this point. It's still way too early to make any announcements, but when the time is right I can't wait to share everything.

My idea might be a monorail. We'll see.

Re: How much of a 48k game is graphics? How much is code?

Paradigm, thank you, I do appreciate your interest and advice. Please note that I wasn't questioning your credentials, merely pointing out that you don't know the first thing about my project, and therefore speculation (even from an expert) would be pointless. It's not that I don't want to hear your...

Re: How much of a 48k game is graphics? How much is code?

You don't want to set a limit on code size anyway While your advice is greatly appreciated, you don't know the first thing about my project, what it is, the hardware involved, either of the machine or the games, or anything about the architecture, how games are distributed, stored and shared, which...

Re: How much of a 48k game is graphics? How much is code?

Thanks, chaps, that's really helpful info! :-) I forgot about level data. I appreciate that every game is different, but there's still going to be a 'bell curve' average. i wonder why OP is interested. prolly they have some bigger question in mind. @Lee Bee, if this is true, could you tell us that b...

How much of a 48k game is graphics? How much is code?

Anyone know roughly what's the split of code to graphics for a "typical" 48k game? Is code normally smaller?

Re: Escape from EXODRON

Nice images, Dave! Reading the bio of the developer, Juan Carlos, I'm starting to suspect he is simply quite naive about these things. It seems like he made this game for his own personal amusement, for fun, and that's fine - personal projects we create for ourselves aren't bound by copyright. He ju...

Re: Escape from EXODRON

Given the "open and free" nature of the Spectrum community and its games, this could have been an innocent mistake made in good faith, perhaps by someone quite young and naive. Though it is striking to see such heavy, uncredited borrowing from a modern game used by someone with a developer...

Re: Guess the screen$

Yup that's correct I was surprised when my random choice had Morkin (regular poster here) and Rorthron (not so regular poster here I think) as the authors :) Ooh, I actually had no idea that our friends Morkin and Rothron were behind that game, or that they'd made a couple of games ten years ago!
