Re: Speedup POKEs
So out of interest I looked at the Maziacs one. That's a little delay routine. He PUSHes BC to the stack, loads BC with 100, pushes BC to the stack AGAIN, then puts 0 into BC, and does a DJNZ, then POP BC, DJNZ, POP BC, Return. A delay loop. POKEing replaces the first instruction with RETurn so you ...

They're both Z80 machines so that's good. But the memory address of the screen is going to different, also ROM calls and that. So as usual "it depends"

Re: Guess the screen$
Expanded a bit. There is another Tripod terror game on the Spectrum other than War Of The Worlds and The Tripods. WotW ist listed as an inspiration on the game details page, but isn't available in the search list on the home screen. Am I really the only one with a liking for sub-Viking Raiders basi...

Re: Most obscure puzzle in a text adventure
Obscure clues and verb-guessing frustration was the inspiration for my cgc entry last year, which I feel had outrageously specific commands, but presented such that anyone can complete it easily. Play it now! https://spectrumcomputing.co.uk/entry/38128/ZX-Spectrum/The_Da_Vinci_Code_2_Trouble_From_T...

I didn't see Barbarian: the Ultimate Warrior or Barbarian 2 in that list or in the search for posters.
The first has a Magazine Poster though. I'm convinced the second one had a poster in the box (but then again, I just remember the advert....)

Re: Commercial Games written in BASIC? Yes, lots!
I think I got the General from the Home Computer Club, so a little cheaper. It's an interesting game, and at least you can't just break in to it... effort there. Some stuff put at ERRSP I think.

Re: Commercial Games written in BASIC? Yes, lots!
The General was very good (apart from a bug that I fixed). There is a small piece of machine code for a sound-effect and to stop you pressing BREAK, but that's about it. I was surprised to find it was BASIC after it crashed...

Re: The best Speccy game by Mission Software: vote
I just played Mission 1 (and managed to soft lock it, so completed it by cheating). Some interesting ideas but a bit dull.
You can't break in to the BASIC code. Or you can but it then instantly goes CONTINUE. 77 bytes of M/C and also line 1 of the program looks a bit weird/REM statement-y.

Re: Hex dump type-ins
I think it was better when they had the hex dump AND the assembly listing. I typed in some machine code for a game and it just didn't work because it was wrong. Knowing what the numbers meant AND what the author was trying to do, it was easy to fix. But just numbers? And without a checksum? No chance.

Re: Recognise the type-in?
Incredible sir. Yep that's the one, and Turtle has been inputted faithfully without modding, so that can be archived as the one. The SQL will be queued. I just typed it in too (and submitted). There are some bits where the printing has clearly gone a bit dodgy so I corrected those in my version to ...

Re: Recognise the type-in?
"Turtle" looks identical to "Turtle Bridge" which is chapter 4 of Richard G Hurley's "15 Graphic Games for the Spectrum", Micro Press, 1983. Especially if line 1 is a REM statement with mchine code in it.

Re: Mike Singleton's Treachery
Only the best would do for Mike Singleton! He does tell you to do stuff that doesn't quite work. Save the location DATA to tape and then LOAD it doesn't QUITE work, as he used Z$ as part of the "building the flag" string, which happens AFTER the location stuff. So in my code you start, jum...

Mike Singleton's Treachery
1984 type-in from the late, great, Mike Singleton. A bit of a boardgame/computer game hybrid, with the Spectrum being the "umpire". And I act out parts. And look at how the music works. And make some possible improvements!

Re: When did you realise it was all over for the Speccy? (I mean, commercially)
Although 16-bit computers were available by the time I got my ZX Spectrum +2 (in 1987 I think), they were still a lot more expensive. That's why I stuck with the ZX Spectrum... and we went for a SEGA Master System instead of the Mega Drive. Just like the Commodore 64 had certain advantages over our ...

Re: Feed Audio into an emulator
On my old PC I typed in an audio sampler and was able to shout into the microphone and the Spectrum picked it up (via "load from audio source" in Spectaculator.) So it was possible. When I try on my new PC though, it never picks up any sound though. It's how I did the "I am the God of...

Re: Please advise a wannabe coder
I quite liked the ZIP Compiler, which was written originally as a type-in. It turns Sinclair BASIC into machine code which is a lot faster (but not as fast as pure machine code). Astonishing achievement. But more modern stuff exists, like ZXBasic that you write in just about BASIC and compiles strai...
