Re: Iconic Character Sprites

Not forgetting 16 and 78 RPM for those of us with even longer memories! My hand-me-down record player had 33 1/3, 45 and 78. So every single I bought automatically had two remixes, the dance version at 78 RPM and the depressing album version at 33 1/3! Frog Chorus at 78 RPM was a banger...

Re: Was Hannah Smith real?

I met a guy at the 40th Spectrum Birthday who met Toni Baker IRL back in the 80s. She wore a duffel coat I think he said.

Someone else on here said that she was a very private person. Great code though.

Wow, YES IT IS! Considering he lost his home and livelihood due to his 'wandering hands' , that's quite a jaw-dropping find! I just stumbled across an advert for Dave Lee Travis's Ten Grand Slam contest. I was intrigued by the "Cambridge" game but looks like it never actually existed. In ...

Yes, there's a hyperjump function in Enterprise.

That looks lovely! I had a go at converting the same game a few years back, but in BASIC and not as beautiful as this!

I did a Snorkified version of "Ant Hill" from "Spectrum Gamesmaster" where it plays a beeper tune. In BASIC.

It's horrendous, a sort of arpeggiated version of "The Ants Are Marching Two By Two...".

To mark the day, @WhatHoSnorkers has Snorkified™ a BASIC type-in for the Dragon 32, “DAMEATERS”! https://youtu.be/HicKziffIfE?si=f1cxwNNxUZSlJk2M Draig ydw I! 🐉 Ironically it's easier to have Welsh games on the ZX Spectrum. You can have a font with accents, and you have access to white for the flag!

The Ian Sinclair 128 Companion has been scanned and submitted. It's OK but not brilliant. The use of the RAM disk is covered though, and PLAY, and MIDI stuff.

Re: That thing with the bottom two lines

You're right in that INK 2 on its own doesnt' work, but you just need to put the INK in the PRINT statement itself. Same with the PAPER. I believe it gets the default PAPER from the BORDER so you'll need to pad as necessary. Drawing and plotting in there isn't possible. When I needed nice lines ther...

Re: Poke to hide "Program:, Bytes:" tape loading prompts

Nah as I said you can just POKE 23739, 244 to enable printing after loading (or as the first line of a BASIC program you load I guess if it's in BASIC). So if you want the loading screen to stay after the code starts running you can do that ;) EDIT: That was a reply to Mr. Snorkers. Yeah, it took m...

Re: Poke to hide "Program:, Bytes:" tape loading prompts

I used to find it by Googling "Jonathan Cauldwell POKE". He talks about it in his book, but I don't know if he originally invented it or not.

I used to use it a lot, but you'd need a CLS or two to reset, so these days I position the PRINT in unobtrusive parts of the screen or something.

The games from the book! The book is available in PDF form, but that's not the same as having a proper copy of the games. Adjudicator looks intriguing!

Re: The World's Greatest Computer Games with Chris Tarrant (UK 1984)

From what I recall, the Commodore 64 disk and tape drives had to be backwards compatible with the VIC20, hence the glacial loading speeds (and people wrote their own loaders and that). And the BASIC was basic so Simon (which one? Who knows) made his own! Carrier Command and Starglider 2 could take a...

Re: ZX Basic & reading two keys at the same time

Yes, I typed in a game called "COSMOS" by David Perry, and then changed it so I could move diagonally. I did this with IN like you say. I'll have a look at the source after work and see what exactly I did... I wouldn't have done anything clever with machine code! The game used A for rows ...

Re: ZX Basic & reading two keys at the same time

Maybe I'm missing something but it doesn't look like you can read more than one key at a time in Basic. INKEY$ only reads 1 Using IN() can get a row of keys but there's no boolean logic to extract the bits. I'd like to have a basic program where I can move diagonally with two keys pressed. Is there...

2 - OR 48k - When you load the game and start demo mode, did you notice the game plays faster while the revs sound is absent? Is this a coincidence? Could it be possible to disable revs sound by doing some poking to test this? I didn't know how to get demo mode to start, but in 48K mode the revs so...
