Re: Let's see if I can beat Scrabble Deluxe on highest level then

I'm pretty sure IF takes S so that's something to consider too, though right now it's all low scoring. One more vowel and you probably could make it on the triple word there...

Re: Let's see if I can beat Scrabble Deluxe on highest level then

Ibn means something in Arabic and is found in names eg Mohammad ibn Musa... It's one of these words which can drive you mad, because it's probably NOT allowed, but it actually means something and when you remember the explanations for many crazy words which are allowed, you start thinking "hmmm...

Re: Let's see if I can beat Scrabble Deluxe on highest level then

I don't think there is a 7 or 8 letter word available with only one E, would have to be through that I. Will think more later. Pretty sure you're right, but the feeling is there (even though I know it's wrong). I like it about Scrabble, racks like these can make me stare at the board for a very lon...

Re: Let's see if I can beat Scrabble Deluxe on highest level then

As an aside, do you guys play Scrabble irl against other people? In the early Noughties I worked in a small pub where board games were a big thing, especially Scrabble. After watching the regulars duke it out for some time I started to ask to play myself. At first they were laughing, with "Wha...

Re: Be careful - image flipping won'r protect you!

It's a funny thing with screenshots and in-game video footage. The former has been seen in magazines since the stone age and the latter is all over YouTube. These are in context of 'review' - fair use. If you're selling a commercial product with this art in it and there's no context of review, well...

Re: Let's see if I can beat Scrabble Deluxe on highest level then

SAX is another option, for 33, but yeah, kills two of the power letters, so I guess FAULT is strategically better.

Re: Be careful - image flipping won'r protect you!

There are legal fair-use exemptions for reviews, and academic journals and the like. Yes, which is why I said the example in the OP seems rather detached from our scene, since it's so blatantly a case of real plagiarism. As in taking somebody's work and pretending its yours. I usppose this kind of ...

Re: Be careful - image flipping won'r protect you!

I think the OPs example is a little extreme, at least when read in context or whatever that is not pure plagiarism. Otherwise, how assorted mags, books, databases, which are either based on screenshots or its their main ingredient, could exist?

Re: Why didn't the Spectrum have many Roguelikes?

I wanted to reply but then remembered my old post on the subject ... I've spent nearly 3 decades playing normal games. I recall briefly toying with Rogue on ZX in the 90s, it was kind of addictive but I couldn't understand what it's all about and why am I not allowed to save? This was pre-internet s...

1.Dustin - what a legend of a game. When I was a kid I was sure it's based on Papillon, but somebody dispelled that notion in the forum era (I still want to believe thou) 2. After The War 3. West Bank They were silly and impossible, but I actually did enjoy Game Over, AMC, Navy/Army Moves, in a way....

Re: ZX Spectrum Top 100 games collection (feat. 274 titles)

V1.2 is up....most likely the "final" one. This update adds Crash Top 100 list plus additional games from it (10). It's a bit weird list - see above - but it's Crash, so I guess we need it too for posterity. But it also shows that Your Sinclair readers were a much more refined bunch, har h...

Re: Guardian article on the best video games magazines

I think it's actually not a bad mix at all, and it cleverly covers all bases. I would place my favourites (YS & ACE) much higher, but then it's not my list. And yeah, Edge, despite its perceived stuffiness and some hilarious mishaps ( GTA 3 - 7/10 lol) probably does deserve the #1.

Re: ZX Spectrum Top 100 games collection (feat. 274 titles)

Looking closer at the Crash list generates another "what were they smoking?" question, this time of a more editorial nature. Both Renegades and SWIV seem to have double entries...how on Earth can you miss an error like that? It's a top 100 list, not 1000 ;) Or is it me, missing something o...

Re: Which has more games... Spectrum or C64?

This is a rather tricky question, but the short answer always will be "C64". My usual quick'n dirty metric is looking at the Gamebase collections, since they're very accurate and adhere to 1G1R principle. The latest one for the ZX (v5 by Manguan) counts 15200 and GBC v17 has 28500 entries....

Re: Why didn't the Spectrum have an FPS?

I guess one reason it didn't have a 'proper' 3D FPS is because of the control method. You need one for movement of the person and one for the directions. Without a mouse, I can't see how this would work. Nah, mouse was only needed for later, fully 3d fps games which had freelook, starting with Quak...

Re: Why didn't the Spectrum have an FPS?

I'd insist that flight sims, and also assorted 90-degrees games don't really qualify as they're different genres (though some borderline cases like Zig Zag could maybe be called "proto" fps). Catch 23 (and Cholo too) looks amazing, can't believe I've never heard of it before - and that it'...

Re: Why didn't the Spectrum have an FPS?

I think it's rather important to define an "fps" as having a smooth 360 degrees freedom of movement in some sort of corridor-based environment. Otherwise the list of games which clearly don't qualify (various dungeon crawlers, sims, or even Op Wolf-likes) will be endless. On the ZX, I gues...

Re: Games you played the most with friends?

Me and my best friend (R.I.P Pusin) were both broke and before we could finally afford our Spectrums we would haunt one sailor-dad (ie rich) dude who had a +2, which in itself was a status symbol. We went there at least a few times a week but, strangely, I don't recall playing any multiplayer games....

Re: Hidden message in Predator

I know you can "bodge" something (2nd language here) but I've never heard that used to describe a person(s). Cute. Especially considering its origin is from wood-dwelling chair makers (probably a rough lot), so it's a clever way to poke fun at fellow coders.
