Re: DenOfGeek : The games that defined the Spectrum
Not minor by any means, but there's a chasm between us hardcore Speccy fans still using the platform to this day, and what the mass market of Speccy owners were doing back in the day. The reality is that most Speccy users were there for Robocop, Batman, Out Run, Platoon, Match Day, etc. I witnessed...

Re: DenOfGeek : The games that defined the Spectrum
So, wait, games like Chaos (plus all the other fare from JG), Stonkers, Nether Earth, Vulcan, or Lords Of Midnight are routinely ranked as pioneering and high on best-of lists, and yet the genre is supposed to be "minor" at the same time? As for removing Chaos I could sort of agree, I thin...

Re: Realms of Antiquity TI-99/4a
I don't see any specific licence details in the docs. The game's author is a very "visible" person though. He is active on many forums and the game's developement was well documented and publicized. I doubt very much that he pulled a shady move and used the emulator without its author's pe...

Re: Realms of Antiquity TI-99/4a
Thank you, you;re right, it's TI files wrapped in an emulator. I didn't read the page properly (sigh). Got it now, just trying to make it run on MiSTer's TI core is proving a bit tricky. This micro requires a lot of rom juggling involved in order to get any extensions going.

Re: Realms of Antiquity TI-99/4a
It's a great CRPG. I see it's on sale for PC, which is nice, but I'd rather have the TI version. His link to the shop site seems to be broken though.

Re: The best Speccy game by Exxos: vote
Cryo was more successful because they rode the early CD-ROM release wave, but the games were mostly terrible, substituting awful CGI renders for decent gameplay. That's including Commander Blood, the sequel to Captain. The couple of pre-CD ones - Dune and KGB - are quite good though.

Re: The best Speccy game by Exxos: vote
Loved Cap’n Blood but has no idea what I was doing! Similar here, though I was quite proud of myself when I made some progress and was able to actually play this game without any manual or magazine help at all. Overall, I think it's one of the better games on ZX Spectrum. It was an incredible feat ...

Re: The 20 games with a <= 10% rating from all three major ZX Spectrum magazines
But, as mentioned, anything below about 80% was magazine code for "not worth the time let alone the money" and just artificially high to keep publishers from pulling all advertising, That really sounds like a vastly exaggerated projection. In reality, I bet the scores between 60-80% were ...

Re: Game Of The Year 2023 Final Vote
I did vote for Seraphima, along Wychewald and Speccy Soccer. I think it's got enough meaty gameplay going on there too alongside the eye candy and tech tricks. I'd prefer Wychewald to win, but am happy that a game from this underrepresented on the ZX genre got such big recognition anyway and gave Se...

Re: Atari 400 Mini
Checking now online, it may be Mule and Star Raiders are the games to try. These games are a real heavy hitters, alongside Seven Cities Of Gold and Miner 2049 er, plus a bunch of decent arcade ports. I think Atari 400/800 had the strongest lineup of all the micros (well, maybe bar Apple II) up till...

Re: Tenager claims to be first to beat Tetris
Since the main theme here is "obsessive", let me pedantically point out that apparently it's possible to reach level 255, so technically he didn't totally beat the game, "just" set a new milestone 8-) I must admit I always have mixed feelings when I read these kind of stories (sp...

Retro Gamer article about coding for NES
Quite an interesting, in depth read about how it was to code for NES back in the Eighties: https://www.gamesradar.com/nes-devs-discuss-the-process-of-creating-classic-retro-games-that-defined-a-generation/ There's a Spectrum/UK connection because it features quotes from people who worked for Rare (P...

Re: Blasphemy! Your favourite C64 SID chiptunes...
Commando High Score music is probably my favourite tune of all time. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=La9XUa4iwpE I think the Spectrum AY main Commando gameplay tune holds its own against C64 but this piece is sadly not included (just the main theme plays over HS too). As for Jeroen Tel... the saying...

Tetris is definitely not a "Nintendo game", no matter how "classic" the NES version is.

Re: 50 Times CRASH glitched! (Part 1)
It's a nice article, although the ratings for the first 10 or so entries I read about don't really seem that controversial (and yes, I include 8/10 for Chaos and Chuckie Egg here).
