Conduct in the Spectrum and wider retro community.

It has come to my attention that there is some unfortunate behaviour around the Spectrum and retro scenes. Some people are being hounded in a manner that is both extremely distressing and damaging. The targets seem to be women, minorities, people with mental health problems, etc. Which is ironic, as...

Re: ZX Vega+ Discussion

It really is time for the public figures associated with the project to think about what is happening. A wasteland is being created in the name of justice. They really should consider the long-term implications of being associated with some of those acting in their names. Thank them for their effort...

Re: What's the tune on the second stage of The Untouchables?

Thankfully, STIL (SID Tune Information List) has the following information:

(#6)
TITLE: A Black Bawl
ARTIST: Harry C. Thompson

Re: Simple AY IF Rev 7

Exolon won't play the music, if it finds an original 48K ROM. Try something like Into The Eagles Nest, which lets you manually choose 48K/128K sounds. Try this and see if you get the same value back: OUT 65533,0 OUT 49149,x PRINT IN 65533 Yes i get the same value back, does this mean the AY chip is...

Re: The hobbit: developing the parser

I helped to debug the Dragon/CoCo (6809) port of The Hobbit and I have to agree that the code is unintuitive. It would be a difficult task to convert the code from Z80 to 6502, certainly not a task for a beginner. However, there are conversions of The Hobbit to 6502-based systems like the C64, Apple...

Re: Speccy ports

I heard a claim, from a programmer, that one game was exactly the same as the Spectrum version - even generating the Spectrum screen output, which was then converted in real-time into the screen format of the CPC. Naturally, it wasn't a very fast game by doing that! But, to be fair, I think they sai...

Re: The Spectrum Show EP 70

I liked the bit where all the old DOS emulators didn't work. :D I think we forget how hard it was back then, configuring everything and managing the drivers manually. Programming was complicated by changes in the hardware and the OS, as time went on. So many hardware aspects were non-standard and so...

Re: Minesweeper 16/48

One thing though, I went up to the hard level and medium grid and bombed first attempt about 10 times in a row... Yeah, that can be a problem with the Windows version too - I copied the level sizes and bomb density settings directly from that. I tried to be a bit fairer with the settings on the Her...

Re: Cassette release of "Vallation"

I bought this on digital download and it's well worth it, I've played it to the end. The change in the bullet mechanics is the most significant thing, it makes the game a lot easier (apart from the perils of changing screens in the last level). Sometimes you can be embedded in a bit of scenery in th...

Re: World of Spectrum....

And as I said earlier, there are precious few facts. Just lots of allegations and lots of misinformation. Like your statement that fewer and fewer people are allowed to post. Who has been banned recently? The only subject that is banned on WoS is that of the Vega+. It's sad that there is so much bi...

Re: World of Spectrum....

Mark, I think you are making the mistake of assuming there are only two sides in the community: "friend" and "enemy". Nobody wants WoS to close down, but we have had to face the facts and realise that the only thing that can be saved is the content of WoS and (maybe) the spirit o...

Re: ZX Spectrum Next

I'm finding it hard to keep up-to-date with the current hardware specs. Initially it was going to run at 7 Mhz with "everything switched on", then it went up to 14 Mhz, which was really impressive. But now it's gone back to 7 Mhz again... Maybe they shouldn't have told anyone that it might...

Re: Collecting missing screens

I believe SPECTRA provides the same kind of multicolor 8x2 as the NIRVANA engine, correct? If so, then these screens can be saved as MLT files using Fuse 1.4.0 or later. Some of the video modes are substantially different, with double attribute bytes, and some have a 64-colour palette as well. I do...

Re: Collecting missing screens

Hi, Peter. Spectra Blitz is a special case, I guess? Is it possible to display the Spectra screen modes in this website's viewer? There's also a Spectra Snake demo by Bloodbaz and a Spectra version of AGD by Jonathan Cauldwell, but I don't know if they'd count as full releases (they're certainly not...

Re: Introduce yourself!

Hello James... Think we had some chit-chat back about 10 years ago, when I did the native OS/2 version of x128 (NOT the recompiled X/Window version for OS/2) You probably don't know - but the OS/2 version actually ended up on a danish magazine cover cd ;) Hi, Thomas. Ah, you trigger vague memories ...
