Hardly played any of these. Gotta give ’em a try when I have some spare time.

Re: Dizzy Treasure Island Crashes After Tape Load

What is weird is that I had the +2A when I about 7/8 years old and seem to remember playing dizzy 2 on it loads - actually I wonder if this was at a friends house? (trying to jog my memory). It is possible to play it on a +2A. You could either load it in 48K BASIC—it’ll work as a 48K game, or selec...

Re: Dizzy Treasure Island Crashes After Tape Load

There are plenty of games that are incompatible with various Spectrum models. Dizzy II does indeed crash on a +2A when loaded in 128 BASIC mode. The original Renegade 48K is also incompatible and will exhibit all sorts of issues on that machine. Check out these bug fixes for popular Spectrum games (...

Re: Issue 2 Spectrum not loading software

It’s hard to say with modern headphone amps, since most of them are designed to drive low-impedance loads (typically 16–32 Ohms). When the Spectrum was designed, it was meant to be used with tape recorders that expected loads in the hundred-ohm range. That said, the LIAM and DAAN looks like it will ...

Re: Issue 6 problems

Thanks Mort! I found an online ad for an original 48k PSU for 15€. Also found a 9v@2A smps for 13€, but needs the plug reworked for polarity. Do the originals need being recapped? Rarely. The original PSUs are pretty robust. Their biggest downside is because they’re unregulated, the 7805 has to dis...

Re: Issue 6 problems

Took the multimeter at the 7805. 5.69V input, 4V output. That’s way too low for the 7805. It needs about 7–7.5V minimum to start regulating the voltage reliably. Your PSU is definitely underpowered. Get a good regulated switching PSU that can output 9V at 2A or more. The Spectrum itself normally dr...

Re: Issue 2 Spectrum not loading software

The Speccy is looking for something like 2–5V of the input signal’s amplitude. Most PCs and smartphones don’t produce a signal of more than 1V. Apple gear (both computers and iPhones/iPads, etc.) can put out up to 1.5V, and most Spectrums are okay with it (mine certainly are), but I’d say that’s the...

Re: Issue 2 Spectrum not loading software

Provided you’re plugging the mono cable into the EAR socket (and not MIC), it’s likely that your audio source level is too low. If you are using a modern device for playback (such as a PC or a smartphone), then their output is usually not sufficient to drive a Spectrum’s audio input circuitry, espec...
