Re: The best Speccy game by Tanglewood Software: vote
1 - Cricket Challenge 2 - The Racing Game The field sport games are the same formula. The racing game arguably has more going for it in terms of presentation and play, but I went for the one that interested me more. Nay third place. I'm not a horse racing fan but I can remember both my uncle and my ...

Beginner's guide to tape preservation
Can anyone give any pointers on how to convert cassette tapes to TAP/TZX. I thought it would be straightforward, but nothing has worked so far. I'm after the basics: -how do I get the sound onto a laptop? I have a tape player, a mono-stereo jack, and Audacity to record. Do laptops automatically reco...

Re: Kempston support
This is what I use on the title screen to load Kempston values into the game code: It might be less confusing to have 3 separate routines rather than all that code poking. So e.g. on the intro page you have a byte that says what control option has been selected, the game code could look something l...

and found out why - different graphics set if you load in 128k mode... never even knew this was possible.... ? They're not different graphics, well they are, but not intentionally . The program uses memory location 23300, which needs to be zero so the program can find the graphics correctly. This l...

I called it a wobbly candlestick, but my experience of it was much the same! In the end I had to do it from stationery, and mark where my feet needed to be and what stance.

Glad you both like it! I think this user review by @Digital Prawn sums it up really well. Having level names, whether in Czech or English would add to the fun, though coming up with 128 of them could be a stretch...

https://spectrumcomputing.co.uk/pub/sinclair/screens/in-game/m/Maglaxians.gif I always return to Maglaxians . It just cheers me up, and reminds me that I may never tire of platform games. You probably couldn't get more 'oldschool' and 'bedroom' if you tried. 23 lives, I reached level 10... of 128! ...

Re: Help with a routine
Hi sludge . That was based on my code from way back. Not sure what went wrong with the 'nextlinedown' routine, but that was one of the problems as goblinish points out. Here's a fix. Compare the extra bits I blanked out - you tried to draw and colour sideways when you only need to go down. Also, you...

Thanks for the heads-up Jim. Congrats on your first 100% machine code game. So good I played it twice (as instructed). Despite it actually running on QPC2, I've added Mona Loser to the DB queue as a QL game. Can't think of a better way to do it. UNIS is actually pretty good. Does anyone know who the...

Heh you're playing it wrong blucey - think of it as relaxing car journey, with explosions. I definitely get why it's a marmite game though. Some will like the atmosphere and that it's not too difficult, but I can see why some would see it as a slog. Contrary to most - I like the game but not the mus...

Re: The best Speccy game by Rossware: vote
I wonder if we'll get any mavericks voting for their earlier stuff. For some people that's always the best. I wonder if Stuart Ross is still a fruit graphic designer? StuRoss 8bit Fruit Design LTD made an honest living right up until a few years ago when AI spoiled the party. The Canary Wharf office...

The Nether Poppleton Treasure Hunt . Since it's been drizzling all day here, I enjoyed a few hours solving puzzles in Nether Poppleton. Both the game and author's names make me picture a quaint village in the 1950s, a bubble which not even my encounter with a local using a mobile phone could burst....

Bloody well done. As I said further up this thread, it's impressive how you just cracked on and did this. Looking forward to seeing it on the wall.
This will confuse archaeologists of the future though - it'll be mistaken for a Rosetta stone or tapestry of a great war
