Re: GAC on 128+2 (not 2a)
Not a +2, but I used to use this with my Toastrack and it worked fine. Does it work on an emulated +2? The turbo loader was ridiculously fast, perhaps the poor old +2 tape deck is having issues? Even if you get it to load it won't use the extra memory, only the base 48k. To be honest you're loads be...

Re: The Press
I wonder if it was a bit late in the day - most of the mags had stopped doing much 'serious' stuff by the time The Press came out. I *think* I've figured this out now. There are another pair of programs on the tape called 'auto savers' which aren't really very well explained and I thought they were ...

Re: RND related question
Yeah, it was always my understanding that RND returned a number of 0 or greater but always less than 1, therefore INT(RND*187) would give you what you want. If it's possible for RND to return a value of 1 I've never seen it happen!

Re: The Press
From what I understand The Expander is actually something completely separate which allows you to use memory which isn't usually available to The Quill for extra messages and locations... Unless I've misread that part of the manual completely. You can also load The Press directly into The Quill, so ...

The Press
Does anyone know how to use Gilsoft's "The Press" successfully? I've been trying to use it to compress the text in some old, half done Quill adventures but I can't help feeling I'm missing a step. I load my Quilled database into the program and compress it as per the instructions, saving a...

Re: Development Environments
I have looked at Microsoft Visual Code. It looks promising as it runs on both Linux and Windows. I did try and read the bit about calling external commands to make build calls but I got thoroughly confused! Is there any chance you could expand on this with some examples? Sure - VS Code is a bit bar...

Re: Development Environments
That looks like some distressingly organised and well-commented code... :o Partly because I do code for a living and partly because it helps greatly while I'm learning. Quite often I come back to routines weeks later and can't remember for the life of me why I did something a certain way, so leavin...

Re: Development Environments
Here's my setup: Microsoft's ' Visual Studio Code ' for editing (it has a plug-in for Pasmo/Z80 highlighting which should also work for most assemblers). Pasmo for assembling. SpecEmu for debugging. BitBucket for source control. VS Code makes for an excellent Z80 editor, it's not just for modern lan...

I'd second adding Gyroscope, and also Gryzor - an excellent conversion.

Blimey, this was the toughest one yet - loads of great games and no 'clear' winner. Eventually went with Fairlight, although I feel a bit guilty for Fred and Frank N Stein. And Feud. And Firelord. And Firefly. And Frankie. Oh no!

Re: Mr Do coming soon to Spectrum
This is one of my all-time favourite arcade games! I wanted a Speccy conversion so much back in the day but alas it was never to be. And yet somehow, here it is - 36 years late, granted, but better late than never.

Re: Worst arcade conversion
US Gold's "Breakthru" conversion was absolutely dismal - borderline unplayable, lengthy pauses for no apparent reason, joystick options which flat-out don't work. And you could complete the entire game without dying by just holding jump down because your car would bounce over absolutely an...

If we're discounting 'the' from titles then I'd like to suggest "The Eidolon", which I spent many a happy hour playing back in the day.
Otherwise I'll wait for 'T'.

Dan Dare for me. Beautiful, smooth, great fun to play - I lost days to that and still love a game even now.
Decathlon would've been my second choice - can't quite forgive it for breaking my keyboard membrane.

Re: New TOSEC of ZXSpectrum (Nov 2017)
Is there a way to download this all in one go? Unusually for archive.org I only seem to be able to browse the files individually, there's no massive zip file. Or I didn't see one if there is. Very comprehensive collection, and a lot of effort put into naming and tagging everything properly, too. Edi...

Cyberun isn't great, but it's easily the best of the bunch. Pentagram is just dead boring, the other two are genuinely awful.
Cyberun's main problem is that it's just too damned hard, but I played a lot of it back in the day with a bunch of POKEs added.

I so wanted to love Sam Cruise like I did the Skool games, but I just found it impossibly difficult without a cheat and impossibly cryptic without a solution.

Voted for Chaos. Chuckie Egg is also blisteringly good, but Chaos has that old 'infinite replayability' bonus so I think it wins.
Chase HQ.... I realise it's really polished and an amazing conversion, but I never really found it much fun to play. Possibly because I'm crap at it.
