Re: The 'familiars'

'Icon' doesn't mean 'the best' or 'quality'. They are games that people remember for any good reason. There some games better than, say, Jet Set Willy (Dynamite Dan 1 or 2, IMHO). But Jet Set Willy was one of the first. In fact, from the list in the first post, every games is from 1983-84. Only Matc...

A simple UDG game, nice to play.
A similar game, Styx by Matthew Smith is another enjoyable game to take it into account.

Thanks for the link. Really impressive stuff!

Jumping Jack or River Raid screens are amazing! I think both games needed improved ones... ;)

My vote for game characters, in old WoS style: Sabreman, Jet Set Willy, Monty Mole, ... and Fred.

Yes, Fred would be a good rank! :D

Re: Disappointing coin-op conversions

I once wrote an article for the Gamesark.it web magazine about the 15 worst and best coin-op conversions for the Spectrum. Even if you don't understand Italian, you will surely recognize the titles I mentioned ;) http://www.gamesark.it/mostra_speciale.asp?c=2210201120001778936&a=0&f=1&s...

Re: Best BASIC game

Speaking of Frogger clones, I remember a cute type-in game, El Barman , where you must cross a crowded avenue to serve your clients. It was not too long to type in, and it was the first BASIC game I've came across. Maybe a bit off-topic as we are talking about the best games, but this is a cute, not...

Re: Best BASIC game

My fave is Indiana Jones y el Idolo de Oro ( I. Jones and the Golden Idol ) is the first game that comes to my mind. Published as a type-in game in Microhobby magazine, it was hard to type in, but unlike other similar type-in games, it was worth typing it. https://spectrumcomputing.co.uk/index.php?c...

Re: Disappointing coin-op conversions

I'd add that it was 1986 and it was Ocean, the final work should have been far better.

I wouldn't call it crap, but very improvable, IMHO.

Another recommendation is Rocman by Magic Team (https://spectrumcomputing.co.uk/index.p ... 96&id=4221.

The usual adventure game with objects to use and a map to explore.

Re: Hidden gems

Another hidden game I played a lot back in the day was War Game ( https://spectrumcomputing.co.uk/index.php?cat=96&id=5626 ). A strategy game cover form Microhobby magazine. There are english instructions in the WoS entry. One of those mostly-BASIC games that surprises a lot. It's in spanish, th...

Re: Voting the games in the Database

I was thinking about it too! The game with more points of every year might have a 'most voted game of 19xx' label in its entry, or so.

It'd be a nice idea, but I expect let's not have another 'Abadia affair' ;)

Re: Disappointing coin-op conversions

Agree with Kung Fu Master. Having playing the arcade version first, the Spectrum version was very dissapointing. I think it could have been better. Another was One on One. The C64 version was awesome and when I knew a friend lent me the Spectrum game, I was amazed! I only tried WS Basketball before ...

Hi! I'm Juan, from Málaga, Spain. I'm a proud Spectrum owner since 1985. I've been posting on WoS forums from more than 10 years and now also here. Seems another cool place to talk about our beloved little computer. I love posting about Spectrum games and I think we'll have a great time here! Sabre ...
