any drive, it was possible to run it with a ramdisk (at least one soviet 8080-based computer did it)

Re: Could the spectrum have gone to 64k?

also some russian clones did have 64k RAM, including the factory-produced Hobbit, where it was intended (but not limited) for CP/M

here's a page about memory configurations of the Hobbit: http://zxdimsla.chat.ru/ZXHOBBIT/34_35.htm

Re: Could the spectrum have gone to 64k?

Being able to read from screen memory is nigh on essential for many kinds of sprite routines, unless you can prepare everything in advance. you don't have to use these kinds of sprite routines but vector gfx in BASIC (not in games) will be a problem And 16K of screen RAM can be a double edged sword...

actually it can kinda address 128k w/o paging 8-)
Spoiler
if the extra memory takes the IO space  (well, a bit less than 128k, you still need some space for actual ports)
take that 6502 fans :P

Re: Good graphics with PAPER colour

I think you might be right there, the light on dark definitely looks better. I think because your brain naturally expects an object to be darker around at edges, which is why dark outlines look better than light ones. it looks better when there's no colour clash, but not over some black-ink backgro...

Re: Do you feel like you'll "always know" Z80?

I'm in agreement 100%. I left it in the late eighties and then picked it up again in 2002. Getting back into it felt as if I had just used it a few days earlier. It feels like forgetting Z80 would be impossible, kind of like forgetting how to speak English. it is possible to forget a mother tongue ...

Re: Is the NEXT an emulator?

NO, it WASN'T and ISN'T. Just the overflow flag alone breaks the backwards compatibility with documented ops, and it's obviously intentional. It most certainly was intended to be binary compatible. partially binary compatible That's why you have the same instructions with the same opcodes; ...that ...

Re: Is the NEXT an emulator?

I can't seem to find a reliable answer either way. Does it emulate or is it hardware? So to directly answer the question, yes and yes. But then, consider this. In all the Sinclair made and some of the Amstrad made ZX spectrum computers, there a ULA that is emulating a bunch of 74xxx logic chips (on...
