Re: Unnecessary inclusions in games
always hated the wall-hugging weapon in R-Type, not even because of its movement pattern seemingly covering less space but because it being so weak in comparison to any other

Re: R-type question
if you have a DivMMC try R-Type GT on a real speccy ,it's a SCL file but can be converted to TRD. The 128k music and effects really do the business. https://youtu.be/La-lQ5MGgr8?si=2ILZ8g0Dr3QeY_EY unfortunately since one AY channel is used for sfx the music sounds too shallow there's a fresh 2024 ...

Re: I'm doing a sonic clone, best way to scroll the attributes layer 4 bits at a time?
a bit faster method than unrolled ldis - for the each line, prepare a code like: start: ld (hl),N: inc l: ld (hl),N ... ld (hl),N: inc l:jp start somewhere in the middle there is a ret, you just need to shift it the each frame and replace one N value and the entry point on the stack table for vertic...

Re: 'never released' 'not a Spectrum game' trash
Nobody's bringing any-random-peecee-game into the database. These items came from Martijn's WoS, that obtained the magazine references from SPOT/SPEX. So what? These items are still random non-spectrum games with random non-spectrum references. The idea here is to recheck each of these titles. My i...

Re: Tall tales about the spectrum
Not sure if it belongs here as it is a true story (but you're free to not believe me) ;) Some day over 30 years ago i sit at home playing R-Type demo with a friend. Then a power surge occured (quite frequent thing back then in the 90s). Normally it would be fatal for the gameplay, but not this time....

'never released' 'not a Spectrum game' trash
I see Ultima7, Ultima Underworld and Wizardry5 appearing at the bottom of the score page (maybe there are more like these with higher scores, who knows). I didn't even suspect there were entries like these. What are they doing in the ZX DB? These are not just "never released" but almost 10...

Re: Some gigascreen game prototype: need input
Honestly, I don't see a problem with an odd number of frames until the checkerboard pattern aligns - and in my case, the pattern aligns with every next frame except when it's an edge, or a thin perpendicular strip, or just too many differences between adjacent tiles (as i tried to replace the gfx w...

Re: Some gigascreen game prototype: need input
My initial goal was simply to create a proof of concept that a gigascreen platformer at 16.666 fps is possible on a classic 128k machine. But the problem here is having an odd number (and especially such a low number) of display frames per each different game engine frame is a bad thing. The result...

Re: Games that made good use of FLASH
From a programmers point of view, you can almost always replace FLASH with software effects and get a better result. Loading screens might be the only exception, because then the CPU is busy elsewhere and so CPU time is more limited. Sword of Ianna uses animation for water surface and flash for wat...

Re: Zaxxon, should have been better for 1985
Would doing a circular buffer help, I don't think a game looking like Zaxxon even needs an actual scrolling. Eg Commando has no real scrolling nor a buffer, but lots of unrolled separate subroutines for almost every type (even a typesize) of bg object, and lots of specialized subroutines for the sa...

Re: Zaxxon, should have been better for 1985
No. Commando and Critical Mass were released in November 1985 and were, with the exception of Nigel Alderton's work on Street Hawk, the developers only releases of the year. In contrast, Platinum Productions released eight titles in 1985 from Zaxxon in January to any-direction scrolling Rambo in No...

Re: Zaxxon, should have been better for 1985
It's easy to say from the safe and cozy vantage point of 2023, with nearly 4 decades of hindsight under the belt. But could it really? It's a somewhat unfair assertion, since the realities of game development were really much different back then, and also the situation and skills of various coders/...

Re: Colour clash query
At the end of the day, it is. There's no two ways about this. The original programmer had absolutely no way of expressing their intent and so any hardware is guessing. Even if you code specific rules for every single individual game, this is still guesswork about what the original programmer would ...
