Re: Were some games meant to be cheated on?
Holy cock! How the hell did you manage to complete it? The parry isn't essential (but does make things a bit easier when you get the timing down) but I'm amazed you didn't even accidentally come across the weapon transform. Fair play to have completed it without using any of those! My Bloodborne st...

Re: Guess the screen$
Holy guacamole (assuming that's correct).
A tiny graphic from a later part/level from an obscure budget game that I'd never heard of, whose archive entry has no screenshot map or YouTube video.
...Yet someone still manages to guess it

Re: Were some games meant to be cheated on?
I think considering it has a whopping 512(?) screens, Starquake still definitely 'feels' do-able... I think I've managed about 6 core pieces, without using a map, and I'm probably a fairly average gamer. The more you play it the more recognisable the routes and areas become (though not as learnable ...

Re: Were some games meant to be cheated on?
In a lot of cases I suspect it was a case of (a) the programmer being the only person to test their own game (while writing it) not realising how difficult it would be to the average player, and (b) reviewers tending not to criticise games for being too difficult. Having said that, I have two words ...

Re: Game of the day...
Dungeon and Souls BASIC game with a roguelike feel. Levels are procedurally generated, and it has a whole host of elements that anyone familiar with souls-like games will recognise (campfire base, defeat enemies to gain souls, the odd boss fight etc.). https://i.imgur.com/UtlBuKg.png I do like a go...

Re: Guess the game from the review (Spectrum 2.0)
Nope. Have a bit more: Although, to be fair, there are a few spells scattered around which help to improve the flow of the action, and in some rooms you can destroy the lair of the spiders - chests full of bones - making them disappear forever. Still, I'm not captivated, engaged or intrigued. Nice a...

Re: Guess the game from the review (Spectrum 2.0)
OK, have a try at this one:
Destroying a whole army of [creepy, well-animated, disquieting] spiders and, returning back to the same room, find it all again alive and ready to kill you is a bit tiring and demoralizing

Re: How long have you been part of the Speccy Retro Scene?
I (regretfully) ditched my Speccy around 1991 when I switched to an Amiga. From there I switched to console gaming (PS1/PS2 etc.) throughout the 90s and early 00s. No Speccy in sight. Started lurking on WoS around 2007, mainly for nostalgia purposes. Then I realised just how much people all over the...

Re: Fallout style RPG devlog
Nice. Could be an interesting challenge to balance builds and branching eventualities. I remember trying a strength/melee-based Fallout character and failing miserably as I was a walking pincushion when trying to close distances between gun-firing enemies... Interesting that you can succeed in...

Re: Should game reviews mark down games for being unoriginal?
Head Over Heels is an interesting debate - I personally wouldn't have rated it anywhere nearly as highly as Crash did. It is an originality issue for me. Knight Lore was released in 1984, that's a whole 3 years earlier. Since its release we'd seen Alien 8, and countless other similarly-styled games ...

Re: Habits you have because of anything Spectrum
I have a walking commute to/from work, and to break up the boredom I sometimes lapse into the arm-swinging, loping gait of the dudes out of Tir Na Nog/Dun Darach. It's quite an economical way to walk if your legs are tired. I prefer to do it when nobody's watching though. When I do gym-style ...

Great stuff....! I would've 100% thought someone would've done this scroll before, but not sure I've seen one till now. Ooh... Ooh... I wonder if it'd be possible to do this scrolling message while the game is loading ..? That would've been awesome back in 87/88 8-) (Oi - stop throwing things at me....

Re: Guess the game from the review (Spectrum 2.0)
Haven't read the whole thread (again, forgive me, it's a long one) but see if you can guess this piece of dirt: ZX Computing : "[software house] had a band of semi-naked girls running around their stand with whips!" Sinclair User : "All the monsters are bright green, which lends a si...

Re: Booty Currah uSpeech minigame
No worries. From playing it, it seems that: - It scrolls from left to right, and you have to collect the little yellow fish - If you run out of air, or hit something, you don't die, but your fish score resets to zero - You can replenish your air at any time by going up to the surface I don't know wh...

Re: Booty Currah uSpeech minigame
It works in Spectaculator after enabling Currah in the options. Everything loads normally. On the menu, you either press '0' to start the game, or just wait with the tune playing for a bit, for the game to start automatically. I then got this static start screen (as shown, without any of the moving ...
