Re: Insanely fast Road Runner turbo loading by Ast A. Moore
As you noticed, when you load Spectrum programs from cassette it is speed versus quality/reliability thing. Speedloaders have shorter pulses for 0s and 1s so everything loads faster but there is a higher risk of errors. Here's a thought. We all know about the bug in JSW that makes The Banyan Tree i...

Re: are there any parallax machine code scrolling routines out there?
Can I suggest you may want to get the basics under your belt before attempting something as advanced as this? I have to agree. If he can't figure out the problem here ... org 40000 call 3503 ld a,0 start inc a rst 16 jp start ... then it's too early to try and get a grasp on parallax scrolling :?

I agree. It's a fun project and a good example of the use of a Pico, but utterly useless.PeterJ wrote: ↑Wed Apr 27, 2022 7:18 am Interesting use for a Raspberry Pi Pico @Nitrowing, but that display is way to small for me!

Re: More smilies?
I was thinking more like just a small number of carefully selected additions, perhaps even replacing existing ones, just to offer a more 'Spectrummy' feel to the forum. For example, the Russian ZX PK forum has Dizzy smileys, which I love. Others that pop into mind are things like Willy, Horace, a C...

Re: ZX Spectrum graphics specifications
Actually, the total memory (128k) allows several screens of graphics - as many as 21 full screens, however that would leave no room for code, or attribute information (the 2 colors used in each 8x8 screen tile). Well, that depends on the type of machine, and not super relevant as he (or she) primar...

Well, if you do, then I don't think you know the definition of "being the victim of ones own success".
It's not their fault it's being delayed, it's caused by problems that affects many businesses all over the world.

Re: Website DNS is flaky at best
Yesterday the page would load, but would remain unresponsive for minutes at a time unless I close the tab and re-open it. I had a similar issue yesterday - the site hung at the LOGIN button and 'refresh' didn't work ... I had to try in a new tab, but other than that I've not experienced any hickups...

Re: How do you change text size in basic?
There is no automatic function to do this. If you need bigger text you'd have to code something that generates it ... and unless you do that in assembler it'll probably be too slow.

... I'd forgotten how awkward the second screen was, quite the difficulty spike. That screen could've probably been put a bit later in the game. Yep, I had a quick play yesterday and in comparison to screens 3 & 4 screen 2 is a bit of a b45t4rd!!! I think it's kind of a good thing that the play...

Re: Sir Lancelot
I've just interviewed Stephen Cargill about Sir Lancelot for Retro Gamer. Cool, I'm lookin forward to reading that. I always loved Sir Lancelot (also the first game I remade for the PC). I was writing with Steven on and off from 2010 to 2014 and got a lot of his life history before and after coding...

To be honest, in a perfect world, the forums would be the best place for news ... but then again - this is not that and unfortunately Facebook is the current best resource for Next news. I'm sure you have a reason for not being on FB, but I would just bite the bullet and make a FB account anyway, lo...

Re: Games that weren't - because of you!
After I coded Dingo back in 2011 I decided that I wanted to convert "Sam Strikes Out" from the Sam Coupe to the 48K Spectrum. I started the project in May 2012 and I can see from the source files that I worked on it until June 2013. All level data for the 62 screens were extracted from the...

Re: The most disappointing hardware for the ZX Spectrum?
I might be talking daft here, but, in 1985, would it have been feasible to have that hardware be 16K of RAM, and load in the 64K game straight off tape? I'm guessing it would be feasible but I reckon the price for the chips would be a LOT higher, probably not commercially viable. I don't know the d...

Re: The most disappointing hardware for the ZX Spectrum?
The Mikro-Plus from Mikro-Gen was also a wasted opportunity. Only Shadow of the Unicorn was released that used it, and that wasn't exactly what it was made out to be. I believe that, had it come with the Wally Week game (I can't remember which one, but possibly 3 Weeks in Paradise), it would've been...

Actually, I think it's pretty great codingwise. Sure, gamedesign and gameplay sucks, but technically it's excellent.
