Re: The best playable demo of a full price game on a YS/Crash/SU covertape: vote

Poll's too big. Break it up into a series. Ironically enough, it has been! My first thought was to throw in every playable demo from a YS/Crash/SU covertape, but that - at 138 entries - goes above the phpBB poll limits, so I've broken it into full price and budget. And yeah, it is still quite huge ...

Re: The best playable demo of a full price game on a YS/Crash/SU covertape: vote

Didn't we had the Cybernoid II conversation a while ago? I thought it was related to that thread. Ah, probably during the Covertape Wars polls. Which feels like an eon ago. PS. Also it was very hard to decipher what kind of games you actually wanted. I was reading the first post of this page and ag...

Re: First tape/games you got with your ZX Spectrum

Ridiculously happy with this Dixons pack-in for my 128K +2 in late 1987. I genuinely don't think there's been a better pack-in selection, and that's even counting the Tynesoft duffers and Harry S Price plagiarism. (Alright, maybe if you count a bunch of games from a second-hand seller and/or some C9...

I don't have any evidence but personally would assume a real staffer who was just assigned tips as her remit. There were plenty of women working on magazines, but but women with any interest in home computing prior to the WWW — particularly technical interest — seem to have been extremely rare. Kat...

Re: The best playable demo of a full price game on a YS/Crash/SU covertape: vote

Cybernoid II: A lovely demo that I've played a long time, not as much as the main game, but that's because Dustin was really good as well. Did I mention this demo is an exclusive level? [...] Rex: Another exclusive level demo, which is nice. Rats. I did have a discussion phase on this, and nobody b...

Is this really still going? She is real. Crash's Nick Roberts was a guest on Maximum Power Up's podcast in 2019, when they had their Top 10 Games Magazines episode (actually spanned across two episodes) and talked of his time taking over from her tips section and making it his own. https://maximumpo...

Re: The best playable demo of a full price game on a YS/Crash/SU covertape: vote

I'd come to vote for Lords of Chaos, but after noticing it was missing I checked the relevant magazine and it's down as being an (exclusive?) 4th scenario, not included in the main game. So, I'm guessing that's why it doesn't count as a demo. Yep, exactly that. There will be a poll for ''Special Ed...

Re: The best playable demo of a full price game on a YS/Crash/SU covertape: vote

Shame the poll is limited to those magazines, missing out the C&VG demo of R-Type Not a bad point. However, if we included all magazine covertapes with ZX Spectrum content on them, then ACE's demo of Bubble Bobble (just the first five levels) would have been my 1st vote, pushing Lemmings into 2...

The best Speccy game by D&H Games: discussion

Advertised on page 93 of YS #19, this mail order specialist in sports management games would later create an imprint called Cult Games, which I'll take a look at next week. Here though, it's time to look at the 13 tangible ZX Spectrum games they put out, I believe this is it: Boxing Manager 2 Champi...

The Colour Of Magic has got this - only just - by five votes! The Big Sleaze and Bored Of The Rings by Delta 4 were joint second, four votes each. 7 votes means Fruity is the winner and that really is it!

And all the proportional voting follows the same pattern:

Fruity 12
Fruit 2010 8
Fruit 2000 4

How come Trantor: The last stormtrooper isn’t on the list? This was one of my all time favourite playable demo’s even if it was just to watch the intro sequence with the amazing tune. It's not a playable demo, it's a rolling demo - ie: unplayable! (The worst type of item on a covertape if you ask m...

The best playable demo of a full price game on a YS/Crash/SU covertape: vote

Here's a massive poll - every playable demo (of full price games) that featured on a magazine covertape given away with the three major British Speccy mags. Ideally, I'd have you take the actual demo into consideration, but in an age of online abundance where you can freely get ~99% of all ZX Spectr...

Re: The best YS/SU/Crash covertape item of a certain type

I already know which one of these I'm going to vote for... Putting up a selection of playable demos for a vote is mostly going to mean fans of a game will vote for it, unsurprisingly. I mean, if such a thing as a Chaos playable demo existed, of course I will go for it immediately over anything else...

Re: The best YS/SU/Crash covertape item of a certain type

Eg. Dustin was originally released in Spain as a Spanish-language game; the only English-language release it got was on a YS cover tape. So it’s technically a re-release of a game, but it’s kind of an exclusive version too. You're right that it's technically a re-release of a game. I've categorised...

Unsurprisingly, by a huge margin, Starquake is the winner here, with 33 votes. Nearest thing to it, is Firelord, a distant second with seven votes. Factory Breakout get three votes to be in third place. Joint fourth goes to Laser Snaker and Wizard's Lair - two votes each. Similar story on the propor...
