Re: Guess the screen$

Pretty sure that would be Advance's Indoor Sports.

I have nothing to hand, so if I'm correct then someone else can jump in.

Re: The best Speccy game by Nexus Productions: vote

Voted for Micronaut One as it was the only Nexus title I played but... I know it's highly regarded by some/many but I thought it was crap. My mates at the time loved it but I could never get on with it. I had a bit of a habit with the occasional well-liked game BITD. Never enjoyed a single second of...

Re: Devfinitive Edition (Joffa): discussion

Cobra is the best technical achievement, but I still prefer the look and gameplay of Hysteria . I seem to remember Cobra has an annoying quirk that if you move or jump then let go of the controls, it often runs on a bit further. Not sure if this was some ill-judged attempt at inertia, or if it was ...

Re: Were some games meant to be cheated on?

As a result I managed to get to the end of Bloodborne without learning the (gun) parry, visceral attack or transform weapon attack mechanics (to anyone who hasn't played the game, these are fairly key combat gameplay mechanics that can give you an advantage). I was a bit miffed when I discovered th...

   In the eighties? Honestly, you'd be lucky if anyone had actually bothered to make sure it was possible even with pokes, let alone without. Even someone as great as Joffa succumbed to not fully testing! For years and years I'd tried to break the world record in Hypersports' swimmin...

Re: When did the Spectrum scene hit rock bottom?

This is the "WoS changing database" thread that Peter mentions: https://www.spectrumcomputing.co.uk/forums/viewtopic.php?t=2829 As far as I'm aware this was never resolved, Einar never received an apology for their actions/slander, and for me this was the scene really hitting rock bottom -...

Re: How long have you been part of the Speccy Retro Scene?

I moved on from the Speccy in 1988 when I got an ST. In 1993 I purchased a PC (a 486 running at a whopping 25MHz, overclocked to 33!) and one of the first things I loaded into it was the shareware version of Z80 that I got on the cover of a PC Format magazine. Updated that to the full version as it ...

Re: When did the Spectrum scene hit rock bottom?

Side comment: I thought telephone directories weren't a thing any more, but one came through the door in the past month. It's about 100 pages. Good grief. You think it's a doubly bad time to do this, because (i) we are supposedly trying to produce less landfill etc. and (ii) nobody looks people's p...

Re: When did the Spectrum scene hit rock bottom?

It's a difficult one to say really - and I have a feeling a lot of members will be similar to mine. I never really felt it hit rock bottom as I simply moved onto the 16-bits and left the Speccy behind. Got an ST in late 88 and other than Chase HQ in late 1989 I never really used the Speccy again unt...

At first I thought that model in the pic above was Jo Guest - does look a little like her from the blurry image. But she'd have been 13/14 at the time so I guess not

Re: Should game reviews mark down games for being unoriginal?

Another thing to bear in mind is reviewer apathy. Crash especially, as they had three reviewers for each game for much of its lifetime, so each reviewer was probably inspecting at least a dozen games per month. Probably 20+ during the Speccy's peak years. Even as someone who still adores videogaming...

Re: Why did you NOT upgrade to a C64 in the 80s?

My school probably had a 60:40 Speccy/C64 split. A good friend had a C64 so we were exposed to both machines. So no reason for me to change to the dark side as I was playing loads of C64 games anyway.

I initially thought of 3 Weeks, but that was setting the Wally sprite as transparent rather than any monochrome.

Re: decolourizing games

There is a well-known game by a well-known software house that gives you this option. No, really. Look no further: https://spectrumcomputing.co.uk/entry/996/ZX-Spectrum/Cobra Though it is only the play area that becomes monochrome, not the scoring/lives etc. bit Cheers! I knew I didn't imagine it.

Re: decolourizing games

What was the name of that Puzzley/Adventure type game that originated on the Apple II in the 1980s? It wasn't The Bard's Tale but it was a name fantasy-based like that. That was completely black and white too and I think all ports of it were. Can't think of its name and it's really bugging me now :...

Re: decolourizing games

Have I completely imagined this but was there a Speccy game that allowed you to either play it in colour or monochrome? I have this vague memory of such a title but at the same time I think I'm making it up. Or maybe I'm getting it confused with some of the filters that modern games have. The Last O...
