Re: ZX Spectrum Next Discussion

The basic is extended and includes things like repeat/until, while and procs. The syntax is a little odd for repeat/until but I'm sure garry had a good reason for it. I think it was WHILE loops that looked most odd to me. This. Instead of the generally used/accepted WHILE/WEND and REPEAT/UNTIL it u...

Re: Elite a lifetime of work :)

I had been playing Elite for weeks, almost every day. It was my life. I had a kick-ass ship, all the upgrades and masses of cash. I hyperspaced into a new system, very low on fuel with a full cargo hold. The screen was red, the sun was huge... I docked at the Coriolis - couldn't hyperspace out (no f...

Re: ZX Spectrum Next Discussion

Having read the manual, I think I'm gonna have to get one. Full 2MB with PiZero, natch.

Mind you, I'm still having trouble with their frankly bonkers use of looping constructs in the BASIC but other than that it looks like a fun language to tool around in.

Re: Keeping track of registers

I was under the influence of mind-altering substances, feeling pretty chill and suddenly struck by the urge to code. Far out, man. :D I cannot recommend it enough. Will you come back to the code the next day with some incredibly nuanced and optimised genius in code form? Or will it be a huge steami...

Re: Keeping track of registers

Or even days or hours later.. :) My record was literally less than 5 minutes. I was under the influence of mind-altering substances, feeling pretty chill and suddenly struck by the urge to code. It flowed like water from my fingers and I was well underway when I realised I'd not written a small rou...

Re: Tape Loader vs Key Scanner detection

There are certain patterns you can look for - commonly, a tight INC B is used. If that's near an IN on a ULA port, you can be reasonably certain that it's a tape loader. There are other code patterns you can look for though. Edit 2: Some TZX files also contain "tape stop here" blocks which...

Re: Poll: How about a printed edition of Al's Spectrum Annual?

I haven't read a paper publication in more than a decade now, I reckon. All PDFs, CBR/CBZ etc on my tablet. I can carry around complete sets of Speccy magazines with room left over for... well, everything really. And I don't have to give up space on a shelf (or more likely, in a drawer) to store the...

Re: Interesting game maps?

My Map! Gawd, did I really make that 19 years ago?

But you can see that it's the details that make the Sabre Wulf map - perspective gave you a subconscious feeling of climbing the screen. The layout is also quite lovely with lots of places to explore. All in all, my fvaourite Speccy game ever.

Re: Speccy version of Astro Invader?

Given that none of the objects in the video set attributes, but inherit what's already on the screen, it should be possible to make a 100% accurate conversion to the Speccy.

Re: Ghosts 'n Goblins VS Ghouls 'n' Ghosts

Thanks, I'll add it to my new year's watch list :) The 128k version of Ghouls was actually more of a disappointment not because of any gameplay or graphical issues (there are none), but because they totally disregarded that level 1 tune. GnG (both) are closely linked to that melody in my mind so muc...

Re: Ghosts 'n Goblins VS Ghouls 'n' Ghosts

With the music that's been supplied I knocked this little video up. Hope it give you a better picture on what the first G'n'G would be like with 128k music. Needs doing properly and releasing as a TZX. Seriously, it's time. Anyway, that tun...

Re: Make Outrun playable

With the advent of the Next and the Omni, both capable of increasing CPU speed, all that's required is for some enterprising soul to hack the games to synchronise their gameplay and sounds with the interrupt. Once that's done, you can crank up the CPU speed all you like and the game will only get be...

Re: 19 new games at Yandex competition!!!!

I think this is all just a misunderstanding, but IMO you can't really claim to be the victim when your first post in the thread contained: it's very badly written Pressing those keys (up/down and right) was just an example for moving in a particular situation. The game is designed so you hold the k...

What? You should show some manners... Wuh? Eh? what's wrong with you? Okay, people please stop this caveman talk and everything else before some serious fight emerges. I dunno, I feel quite attacked here tbh. First I raised an issue with a game where a design decision made by the author caused the ...

What? He means that, if you are moving down and wants to turn at the next right passage, then simply keep pressing both down and right keys. Ahhh, so in essence, "The author hasn't made this game badly, you're just not doing it right". I actually like the game - it's curiously addictive. ...

Re: 19 new games at Yandex competition!!!!

Alone in a dark maze is quite simple but has a cool soundtrack. I'm stuck at screen depth 'F' though, have come to a bit of an impasse and it's driving me crazy..! That game is not well designed, though it is nicely presented. There are two issues - firstly, you can only "see" a sho...
