Re: Little bugs in the database 5

I noticed that all entries pertaining to Italian re-releases within the Jackson Soft Oro collection are marked as "unauthorized versions". Quite the opposite in fact: Jackson Soft were the official distributors of such games in Italy. They even successfully sued one of those tape magazines...

Re: Spectrumpedia second edition - it's here!

Time for another update :dance Some corrections and additions have been made to the text. In particular: - Volume 1: the entry for the Timex Sinclair TS 2068 has been expanded. - Volume 2: information about the Stellarmode video mode has been added (also check the bibliography/web resources in Chapt...

Re: Briscola tape?

(I wonder why the covers depict an apple being peeled with a knife and a fork) All Nuova Newel tapes featured the same inlay card, with the false title typed up on them. Maybe only the manager/staff could be able to answer this question - but good luck in finding them... :? Hacking level: God Downl...

Re: Briscola tape?

Once again, Nuova Newel tapes surface on ebay. And once again, I must say it: everything Nuova Newel released was pirated from other sources. They sold an hack of the Horizons tape, for Clive's sake :x The second Briscola was an original game released on Load 'n' Run June 1985 issue. I suspect Nuova...

Time Gal, a PlayStation laser game converted from a 1985 Taito coin-op, although it only runs, to my knowledge, on an ATM Turbo 2 clone taking advantage of Alone Coder 's 16col video mode. http://atmturbo.nedopc.com/download/cdsoft/time_gal/time_gal.htm Although it does not emulate a "real&quo...

Re: What would you have liked to see on the Horizons tape?

I see many of you would have wanted to find more games on the Horizons tape other than the simple Thro' The Wall . Neither Clive Sinclair, nor his collaborators who actually designed the inner workings of the Spectrum thought of it as a gaming platform, so that would have been highly unlikely. Richa...

Re: Thoughts on the Amstrad takeover

Apparently Sinclair did not actually have the rights to all the firmware. The ZX Spectrum 16K/48K ROM code was written by Nine Tiles and Amstrad had to go to them to ensure that Amstrad had all the firmware rights. Yes, in fact the misadventures of Sinclair BASIC began long time before. Its origins...

Re: Thoughts on the Amstrad takeover

Sinclair turned over to Sugar the rights on all of Sinclair Research's present and future computers, Clive simply started a different company to make his next computer - the Z88. Sorry, I thought that was obvious, since the Sinclair brand itself had been sold to Amstrad. To release the Z88, Clive S...

Re: Thoughts on the Amstrad takeover

With the agreement signed on 7 April 1986 in fact Clive Sinclair turned over to Sugar the rights on all of his present and future computers, including both hardware and firmware, together with the historical logo. The financial side of the operation was valued in £5 million for the takeover alone, p...

Re: Nightmare Rally - Your views

I never played it back in the day; I only discovered it through emulation.

I think it's pretty good, with some unique touches trying to convey the idea of a "real" rally, rather than a ride along a circuit like the majority of driviing games for the Spectrum.

Re: Thoughts on the Amstrad takeover

Sorry for the long historical report, but I think it should help me explain my views on the topic. In June 1985, Sinclair Research was in the red for £15 million, without counting the £6.4 million of debts accumulated by subsidiary Sinclair Vehicles Ltd, expressly created to manage the electrical ve...

Re: What would you have liked to see on the Horizons tape?

For me, the real fun with the Horizons tape was breaking into the programs, modifying some parameters and see what changed and if they still worked. I was particularly intrigued by that routine that printed enlarged text on the screen by employing the LPRINT command (if my memory serves me well) in ...

Inufuto, the mysterious Japanese developer responsible for many unofficial conversions and old-style games for several systems including the Spectrum, released today Guntus, a shoot-em-up reminiscent of Gaplus. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=73jskILcVeo Download: https://inufuto.web.fc2.com/8bit/gu...

Something like "Gonna fight, I Ball!". The fixed file has been included in my TAP collection for the DivIDE/DivMMC if you wish to test it yourself:

Re: What's this command? (Poll)

That '#' character made me suspect that it had to do something with channels and streams, but having never come across such a syntax in almost 39 years, I thought it was no genuine command. But after all I never operated or owned a ZX Interface 1 and only know the basic syntax to load MDR files with...

A suggestion by goodboy made me find the way to fix the TAP image file of I, Ball so that the speech heard upon loading won't be distorted any more. The existing file has been therefore updated.

Re: DivMMC Future compatibility?

I, Ball runs through the (bloody horrible) speech I, Ball is bugged, the speech will get distorted. There is a fixed file, but the correction can only be applied to the original TZX tape image file, which is recorded with Firebird's annoying custom Bleepload scheme, and for this reason it cannot be...
