Re: Curious eyebrow-raisers from Sinclair User's Gremlin column

Sinclair User #51 Jun 1986 The Amstrad era of the ZX Spectrum has just begun, and Gremlin's not happy at 'Lord Saccharin' describing Sir Clive Sinclair 's computer reliability record as "appalling", so he throws some shade at those Amstrad hi-fis with "flashy chrome knobs that fall of...

3D Starstrike
3D Tank Duel
Starstrike II

Right then, that's the revised shortlist!

Devfinitive Edition (Derek Brewster): discussion

And so we move onto Derek Brewster, a major programmer for Micromega but left them just before the in-fighting and quality plummet brought them down. Derek became an adventure review for Speccy magazine Crash, while also freelancing to make games for budget labels like Mastertronic and Code Madsters...

The best Speccy game by Realtime Games Software: discussion

Renowned for producing Starfox, Starglider, Carrier Command and Battle Commmand on the Speccy, but none of those revered games will appear in this shortlist, because it's all about the PUBLISHED games from the brand, rather than games published on other labels (Reaktor, Firebird and Ocean in the cas...

The two efforts that Atlantis deemed worthy of being 'premium' output. Hmm. Honestly, it's like the early days of Imagine here. No proportional vote this time round as it's only two of them, so if you've never played their output before, set aside 15 mins and let us know what you think... Nicotine N...

ZX81 > ZX Spectrum

This is a bit of an echo of my 48K > 128K thread where I asked for examples of 48K games being better than the 128K version. So yeah, there aren't many games that came out on the ZX81 and the ZX Spectrum, and I guess there are very very few games regarded as being better on the ZX81 than the Spectru...

Re: Are all coders basically autistic?

Wow, I really underestimated how distant someone could be from normal social discourse. Those justifications for those vile childish insults truly are grim reading. I'll hold my hands up and admit to having used the ableist 'R' slur in the past, but that was decades ago as a naïve youth and not some...

Re: If your Spectrum ownership was with a different model...

I had this envy of the 128K machines and their ability to load games in one go and their music chips, and also of the CPCs because of the music. Correct me if I'm wrong, but isn't the music capability of the Amstrad CPC just like a 128K Speccy because it's the AY-3-8912 sound chip? I only got envio...

If your Spectrum ownership was with a different model...

I've said before that I started out on the grey +2 in late 1987, much later than most who embraced home computing in the 1980s (a miracle anyway considering how absolutely brassic my family was), and no real regrets about it. I have often wondered how my computer-owning history would be in those par...

The best Speccy game by Atlantis Gold: discussion

The very short-lived 'premium budget' label set up by Atlantis Software that seems to have issued just these two games at £2.99 each: Nicotine Nightmare Self Destruct I can't say they exactly look worthy of the 'premium' level, but anyway, I think that's the entire output of tangible ZX Spectrum gam...

I'd be curious to see your reaction to the SAM Coupé's output via RF... on a 4:3 display, I played on one quite regularly in 1992-93 at friend's house, so yeah, it was Chaos with the wizards and creatures looking like they've just had Christmas dinner. Re: Are all coders basically autistic?

If anything, my autistic nature is very much against awful interfaces and other terrible practices in technology. One thing that really winds me up is the recent propensity for filming things on phones in portrait mode, which looks shockingly bad in landscape (the natural view of pretty much all hum...

Aw, so it is the cartoonist that worked for Words And Pictures (Mastertronic's choice of graphic agency)! I pretty much bought almost any Mastertronic game with that style of artwork on it (Curse Of Sherwood, Feud, 180, etc) but rarely ever saw Atlantis games in the shops.

Re: Are all coders basically autistic?

Agreed. Aside from the negative connotations it seems intended to invoke, what would poor key choice (or poor UI design generally) have to do with autism? I have to echo the sentiments here, and I was diagnosed as autistic ten years ago. I wouldn't choose those key choices and that's nothing to do ...

Ah, bless Kieran's adaptation. I hear it's in 4K resolution with a High Dynamic Range colour palette, 7.1 Dolby Surround Sound and the visual effects makes Game Of Thrones look like Ceefax.
